It all started with a passion and interest in building from a young age, further than my memory goes back. Growing up I was surrounded by a lot of family members who were in construction and I always loved watching and learning about what they were doing. Hard to believe even for me but when I was 12 I did all the electrical work on my parent’s kitchen remodel!
I have learned new and better ways since then but it was my start and I am grateful to my parents for that start and the role they have played in my life. For me, it was fun and something I loved doing. I never thought it would turn into this business.
During summers in high school, I worked for my uncle who owns a small remodeling company. My junior and senior year I spent at Jackson High School in their construction technology program and earned college credits. While in high school my love for construction turned into a small remodeling company Sluss Construction. Small repairs turned into remodels which turned into whole-house renovation.
I went on from there to graduate from the University of Akron with a bachelors in construction engineering and management. While in college I co-opped and worked summers doing commercial remodeling. Remodeling is great and with the seasonality of the weather in Ohio, we still do interior remolding. My goal with remolding was to always do the best possible job and try to purchase better than average materials. It was always important that our work behind the walls looked as good as the final product.
Outdoor work has its differences so the first few years I spent a lot of time out in the field finding the best ways to build and teaching carpenters I have worked with for years. That is one great benefit when you call Archadeck of Akron that the same person who is designing your project has actually built a similar project.
Another great benefit is being able to offer hands down the best warranty in the business since we have the national backing to do it. With that, I can offer more to a customer with Archadeck than I on my own. This was the main reason for joining Archadeck. To have the help and support of a national office but to continue working with local homeowners. We have a great local team and are always learning and adding to it.
I love hearing customer’s feedback on our carpenters and how well they build. We have an eye for detail and it shows. Yes, other companies have pictures that look good but trust me their details are not the same and on your project, you will see closer up than a photo. It has always been my goal to have a company that goes beyond just doing a job to make money. Our relationship with each customer is as important as the job we leave behind. Since construction is a great trade and skill to know my work goes beyond business and even northeast Ohio.
Since the writing of this page, I have been on a half dozen mission trips. Most of them to Mazatlan Mexico with Shoulder to Shoulder. I have been fortunate with the skills I have been given and some of the most rewarding work I have done has been giving back on those trips. My wife and I met here in Akron but have had a similar passion for Mexico and the friendships we have built there. We had the opportunity to get married in Mazatlan. We live in Akron Ohio with our two furry friends.
Family and friends are one of the most important things we have in life and I love the opportunity I have to create spaces where families can enjoy more time together.
