When you choose Archadeck of Akron to design and build your deck, patio, porch or other outdoor living space you get much more than just the structure. What do we mean by this statement, you may ask? The answer to this question is as simple as it is complex. Where other builders may be quicker to the draw in coming up with a quote, or have the ability to start your project on a dime, you have to ask yourself why?
Do You Know Who’s Building Your Project? With Archadeck, You Do!
If you’ve started to round up quotes or estimates for an outdoor living project at your home, how do you know who to trust? Have you asked friends and colleagues for referrals? Have you seen builders recommended online—but recommended by people you don’t actually know? Have you read their reviews?,,, Have you perused their completed project portfolio? Have you done enough due diligence?
Just like any other service professional, the ones who are really good at what they do have a backlog. Any builder that claims they have no backlog should immediately send a red flag. A quality, well designed and built structure takes time – time to craft a design, time to communicate with the client, and time to secure permitting and materials.
Hiring a deck, patio or porch contractor is no small task, especially if you prefer to “go it alone.” That might mean meeting with builders you find online, vetting them and comparing their quotes or estimates. One issue with this approach is you don’t necessarily know what kind of experience you’re going to have once you hire someone.
With Archadeck, You Get More Than A Builder
As part of North America’s largest deck and porch builder, Archadeck locations nationwide have built more than 100,000 outdoor living structures since opening the doors in 1980. If that is not impressive enough, your local Archadeck location (Archadeck of Akron), has a network of experts that have our back. We are licensed, insured and trained in all applicable areas of the trade. Each Archadeck location maintains a minimum of $1 million in liability coverage and full workers compensation insurance (where required by law) to protect you from any possible mishaps.
We have also built and nurtured relationships with preferred material vendors to ensure your project is built with the best materials and the most value.
When you set up a design consultation with Archadeck of Akron, we listen to the type of outdoor living space you want. We then tailor that space to meet your needs, personal tastes and budget. What you get with us in not just an “estimate” of what your project will cost. We provide an exact quote for your project – this means you know up front what the cost is and ensures no surprises along the way.

At Archadeck, we do a lot more for our clients than just build structures. All of our outdoor living projects start with a professional custom design. Your design consultant will take the time to understand how you view your outdoor living lifestyle. This includes the types of activities you wish to carry out in your new space, how many people your space will need to accommodate and much more. We want to know your vision for the project. Whether you are adding a simple wooden deck or concrete patio to your home or a multi-faceted project, you have our undivided attention. Are you thinking of a combination outdoor living space that contains more than one structure? We can even design your combination project in phases according to your lifestyle and budget.
Every deck, porch, patio or other custom outdoor structure we build is backed by Archadeck’s written warranty for one year workmanship and for five years of structural integrity. When you choose us to be your contractor, first, we include a one-year workmanship warranty with every project. This will cover defects including severe warping, leaking or shifting. Then, we also provide a five-year structural integrity warranty covering the fitness of the construction components and the integrity of your new outdoor living space.
These warranties are further backed by the National Guarantee Corporation, which guarantees that your residential outdoor living project will be completed to the terms of your contract and built to the agreed upon specifications and with a warranty of performance for up to two years.
And there’s more! Depending on the building materials you select, manufacturers’ warranties may apply to protect you against defects in materials. And Archadeck’s intensive training and, in many cases, certification as an official installer help reinforce your confidence that those manufacturers’ warranties won’t be adversely affected by installation issues.
Without a doubt, no other company in the remodeling and outdoor living space industry provides this level of client assurance and protection Archadeck does. Have you thought about having a second living room at your home—outdoors? Whether you call it the living room, family room, or den, there is always one room in the house where everyone can relax. A place where family and friends can sit back and watch movies and sports on TV, play games, talk, laugh and eat. Whether it’s a patio, porch, deckoutdoor living combination space you love spending time outdoors, an outdoor living room might become your favorite place.
Our clients in Northfield, OH, wanted to add just such an outdoor room, and we designed it for them as a covered patio. You can tell by the way they’ve furnished the space that they plan to spend a great deal of time out here! They have plenty of seating and room to entertain, with a fire pit for sheer enjoyment. They also have space for a grill and a dining table, so they’re ready to enjoy delicious meals outdoors. The entire setting says, taking it easy and living the good life.
Since your Akron porch builder is also your Akron hardscape builder us—we’re skilled at bringing together the components to create your perfect outdoor room. Did we mention that we’re also your Northfield OH porch builder and hardscape builder? Because we design and build a full range of outdoor living structures, we are able to combine them to create multi-faceted, multi-functional outdoor rooms.
Once you start exploring the options for an outdoor living combination space, you’ll see that the possibilities are truly endless. What components would you choose for your combination space? A screened porch, low-maintenance deck and pergola? A deck and patio combo with a fire feature? We help you select the structures you want and combine them in a custom design to function as a cohesive outdoor living space. You select the materials you want for the project, with our help. Then, all you have to do is relax and enjoy.
A Covered Porch or Patio is Your Protected Outdoor Space
These Northfield OH homeowners wanted a protected outdoor space where they could relax comfortably. In this case, protected meant covered, not screened. When we build a patio with a roof over it, some folks call it a porch and some call it a covered patio. We call it shade! These homeowners will not need to sit in the sun unless they want to.
For this project we built a custom stain and stamp concrete patio in a 36" Ashlar stamp pattern. Working with the slope of the yard, we incorporated a hardscape retaining wall into the project. The low wall embraces the patio and creates a visual boundary for the space. An additional hardscape element is the gas-burning fire pit. We built these hardscapes with Techno-bloc blocks and wall caps.
For the patio cover, we designed a roof with a stunning open-gable end. We used tongue and groove pine for the ceiling and wrapped all of the beams in cedar and posts in AZEK. If you look closely, you can see the steps we built for the doorway leading into the home. We used low-maintenance AZEK for the steps, an extremely durable material perfect for any high-traffic area. Also, bringing indoor comforts outdoors, we installed recessed can lights in the ceiling as well as everyone’s favorite, the ceiling fan.
In addition to the elements you can see here, the scope of this project included work to resolve drainage issues near the retaining wall. We also tied in all of the downspouts for the space. While this isn’t the glamorous side of the work we do, it will keep this outdoor living room free of drainage problems.

The last few months have been a lesson to us all, especially when it comes to preparedness. If you spent the months of March and April with a good stock of toilet paper, count yourselves fortunate. When it comes to building a new deck or porch, preparedness should not be a concept, but a practice.
Even though your decision to build a new outdoor living space could happen in the moment, planning ahead is essential. Especially now, in the times of still-low-stock of everyday household items, like tissue products. Don’t get us started on disinfectant wipes! Did you know that the COVID-19 crisis has affected the building industry? Among one of the most low-stock items has been pressure-treated lumber. The demand for lumber grew as homeowners began to spend more time at home, and complete DIY building projects. Many DIY-ers can tell you that trying to purchase pressure-treated wood was a lesson in futility. Archadeck of Akron has you covered! Our close relationship with building materials suppliers will ensure that your project can move forward NOW. You can keep shopping for TP, and we’ll build your new deck or porch!
After your custom design consultation, Archadeck will get to work on your designs, which will show you what your new space will look like once built. Also, you will receive a full building specification, listing all the products that will be used to build your deck or porch, along with a complete quote for your project. Once your project goes under contract, Archadeck of Akron does the rest! From building permits to project insurance, ours is a full-service offering. What’s more, our professional builders are some of the best in the business. You can count on them to construct your deck or porch to exceed building standards. Know what else you get? Warranties! If you have worked with a deck or porch builder in the past, you might not have received any assurance that your space was protected under warranty once the construction crew left your home. Archadeck offers a one-year craftsmanship warranty, five-year structural warranty, and all the manufacturers’ warranties extended for the products used to build your space. Hiring Archadeck of Akron to be your professional design and build firm is a practice in ultimate preparedness!

When these Akron, OH homeowners were relaxing under their front porch addition built by Archadeck of Akron, they realized their backyard needed a facelift too! What did they do? They contacted us to add a beautiful patio cover to their existing outdoor space. Knowing how much they loved their first project, they knew they could count on the trusted experts at Archadeck to bring their backyard vision to life.
— The first project we did for this client was this lovely front porch upgrade.
So Much More Than a Covered Patio
We custom designed and built this covered porch to cover the existing patio. This backyard solution offers shade to enjoy the space on brighter days and offers rain protection. Now, relaxing in the backyard can be done no matter the weather! Adding a roofed structure also keeps furniture protected from the sun, preventing fading, as well as debris.
The shed roof offers a unique design detail that makes the existing patio more enjoyable for these homeowners. The beadboard ceiling with recessed can lighting offers ambiance in the evening and a modern, sleek aesthetic. The porch features Infratech slimline (SL) heaters so it may be enjoyed on chilly evenings. A custom TV mount was installed within the space so the homeowners can watch movies, the big game, and much more in their new protected space. The ceiling fan is also a great feature to keep bugs away during the daytime and adds a refreshing breeze on warmer days.
Your Dream Space Built One Step at a Time
One of the benefits of working with a design-build company is being able to build your project in phases. Working on the first part of your outdoor structure, we will know the structural and building code requirements for future projects. For instance, we could build a deck or paver patio strong enough to support a future porch. When using Archadeck for building multiple structures, you can rest assured that your spaces will be properly constructed from start to finish.
Your Outdoor Space Customized to Your Specifications
We pride ourselves in building each one of our outdoor spaces to meet the desires of our homeowners. Before designing your project, we always ask questions, such as how you plan to use your space, preferred aesthetics, and budget. Based on a total understanding of your priorities, custom designs will be created. Your taste and style are unique and we reflect that when crafting your space.
Would a covered outdoor living area complete your backyard retreat? If you’re considering adding a beautiful structure to your backyard, we’d love to hear from you! Let Archadeck of Akron create your one-of-a-kind outdoor space that you will enjoy with family and friends for many years. You can contact Archadeck of Akron today at 330-754-1044 or email us.
This covered patio project in Kent, OH, illustrates that you don’t have to sacrifice beauty or function when adding a patio or porch to your home. When you enlist Archadeck of Akron to design and build your new outdoor living space, beauty and function are both included.
Our clients wanted a covered space they could enjoy regardless of summer heat or scattered rain showers. As you can see, we designed this covered paver patio with that function in mind. When the sun beats down on Kent, OH, you’ll find these homeowners outdoors enjoying their shaded patio and the breeze from a ceiling fan. When pop-up rain showers send others running inside for cover, these homeowners can stay outside, dining or relaxing, protected by a sturdy roof.
Function Without Beauty is Not Enough
This project is gorgeous, too! You’re looking at back-door comfort and ease fashioned with front-door aesthetics. The curved paver steps, flanked by columns, present an elegant entry at the rear of the home that’s graceful enough for a front entrance. The covered patio addition frames the back of the home and creates a comfortable setting designed for pure relaxation. In case there’s any doubt about that intention, you need look no farther than the hammock!
Akron patio and hardscape builder Archadeck of Akron designed and built this protected paver patio with a double border of contrasting pavers. The curved edge at the front of the patio echoes the gentle curve of the steps leading into the home. We repeated the darker band of pavers at the base of the steps and as an accent row in the columns.
From Patio to Covered Patio: Just Add Roof
In addition to designing these lovely hardscapes, we also brought our talents as Akron’s premier porch builder to this project. The gable roof features a decorative end detail while its opening increases air circulation in the space. The interior features a beautiful knotty pine ceiling. And what would a covered porch or patio be without a ceiling fan? We also installed recessed can lights in the ceiling so the homeowners can enjoy the space after dark. For additional convenience, we integrated electrical wiring into one of the stone (paver) columns and added an electrical outlet.
For homeowners looking to maximize the function of their outdoor living area, a covered patio or porch offers tremendous benefits. With the beauty of hardscapes and the protection of a roof, what more do you need to enjoy the outdoors at home?

We know of two types of clients in the realm of remodeling and outdoor living construction: those who have been swindled and those who haven’t. Which one sounds like your experience? Keep reading, because we are going to clarify the difference between a builder’s quote and an estimate. We’ll also explain why “the Archadeck difference” includes providing you with a quote for your Akron-area outdoor living project, not an estimate.
Would You Rather Get a Quote or an Estimate?
What kind of outdoor living project do you have in mind? A wood deck or low-maintenance deck? A screened porch or 3-season room? A patio with vertical hardscapes, or a deck-porch-and-patio combination? When you shop around for an outdoor living contractor, you may find that most want to provide you with an estimate for your project. Archadeck of Akron, on the other hand, will provide you with a quote instead. What’s the difference between a quote and an estimate? A true quote leads to satisfied clients who know exactly what they are paying for and how much it will cost. Proceeding with work based on an estimate, on the other hand, can leave homeowners confused, disappointed or angry.
Signing a Contract Based on an Estimate
Other contractors—we’ll refer to them as our “competition”—will give you an estimate of what your project will cost. Unfortunately, that initial estimate is usually priced at the lower end of the scale to tempt you to sign a contract. You may like what you hear! The objective is to get you to commit to a project based on little more than a price scale. More often than not, you’ll find (in hindsight) that you didn’t have enough concrete information to make that decision. The end result is likely a project that was never really clear. You thought they understood what you wanted. They will say they thought you knew that the scope of the project would only include a, b and c and not x, y and z. The actual structure you wanted may end up costing a great deal more in the long run—if you get it at all.
Signing a Contract Based on a Quote from Archadeck
The way Archadeck of Akron prices a project sets us apart from the competition. We provide our clients with an EXACT pricing quote and a detailed, customized design before the contract is signed. This way, excluding any addendums, you know exactly how much the project will cost going in—AND how that project will look. No surprises!
It’s not unusual for a client to request a change or add something to the scope of their project after signing a contract. When that happens, we create an addendum to the contract specifying exactly what is being added or changed and what the new price will be. Both parties sign the addendum so we can be certain we’re all on the same page. Again, no surprises!
How Archadeck Provides an Exact Quote for Your Project
Because it sounds so straightforward, you may wonder how we are able to give you a precise quote when others cannot. In one word, “details.” It’s part of what we call “the Archadeck difference,” and you can read more about why the Archadeck difference should matter to you.
Your Archadeck design consultant will always listen intently to your needs and desires so we can create a truly custom design when preparing your quote. While our competitors may use a cookie cutter design, we will design a project that precisely meets your needs and matches your unique home.
Our initial design consultation is free. If you would like us to create 3-D design renderings, we will require a design retainer. These computer-generated drawings will reflect all of the details we’ve discussed and will help you visualize your project as nothing else can. You’ll see how your finished project will look and how it will complement your home. The design retainer will be credited from the total project cost should you decide to sign a contract and move ahead with the project we’ve discussed.
Archadeck’s Custom Design is in the Details
During the design process, it’s not unusual to go through a couple of iterations as we refine the details. If the design rendering doesn’t look like you were expecting it to look, we’ll talk about changes we can make to achieve the look you want.
What if you’re having trouble visualizing the size or shape of your project design in relation to your home? A member of our team will go to your home and lay out the dimensions of your project on the ground. We can lay down rope or use spray paint on the grass to show you the scale and help you visualize your design in relation to your home. Before you sign a contract! No surprises. No disappointments.
Suppose you’ve decided on a low-maintenance deck but are having trouble choosing the color you want for your composite decking boards. Even after you’ve signed a contract and we’ve placed your project in our construction schedule, you may have more time to think about colors. When it becomes time to order your materials, we schedule a pre-construction meeting where you can finalize your selections of color and railing style.
If you’ve spoken with other outdoor living contractors before reading this, you can probably tell a difference—the Archadeck difference—already. Intrigued? Give us a call to schedule a conversation! We also recommend reading these two articles:

Have you ever booked a vacation to an exotic location, which required multiple reservations, and too many choices for making your vacation hassle-free? Large resorts offer all-inclusive stays for a reason. The same goes for building multiple outdoor living spaces onto your home. Archadeck is the answer for your all-inclusive Akron deck and patio builder.
At Archadeck of Akron, we don’t build porches, decks, OR patios. We build porches, decks, AND patios. If you are planning multiple outdoor living spaces, there is no need to hire one deck builder and another patio builder. Allow Archadeck of Akron to design the deck and patio of your dreams – all-in-one, built-in harmony to accommodate your every outdoor living need.
At Archadeck, we have the experience, knowledge, and resources to build multiple living spaces all at once. We design. We obtain permitting. We are licensed and insured. We guarantee our construction. Not all deck builders can say that!
Obtaining separate quotes from separate contractors for your deck and patio construction will not only create a disjointed building process, but it could also result in a disjointed final result. If one contractor comes in first to build one space, how will the second contractor know if he can properly build the second space without interrupting the first? Save yourself the trouble of twice the work. Archadeck will do it all for you!
If you are afraid that you cannot build the deck and patio, or any combination of outdoor living spaces that you dream of, speak with Archadeck of Akron first. Another service that we offer is financing for your outdoor living project. This will ensure that you can build both spaces at once, rather than going about it in multiple phases. Archadeck offers flexible financing through LightStream, a division of SunTrust Bank.
What’s more, if you are looking to keep your budget lower, Archadeck of Akron offers budget-friendly deck designs that are anything but standard. These beautiful wood decks are the most customized lineup of decks you will find anywhere, all under $12,000. Saving money on your deck can help you include your second outdoor living area in the same project. Deck and patio, deck and three-season room – the operative phrase here is, “deck AND.” Just another deck building option that our company can provide, which others do not.
If you are planning on building a deck and patio outdoor living combination, you need only call one company. That company is Archadeck of Akron. We can schedule a “virtual consultation” using video-conferencing technology. To get started, just call. You can contact Archadeck of Akron today at 330-754-1044 or email us.
When it comes to building the best outdoor structures, both in terms of quality and usability, Archadeck of Akron excels. Our decks, porches, and patios are carefully-planned to meet your every need and built to the highest quality standards.
If you are in search of a quick-fix outdoor living solution, we implore you to reconsider. In the age of HGTV, we tend to think that construction takes much less time than it actually does. We’re so used to seeing full-home renovations completed in one hour’s time, that we forget there is a lengthier process in place behind the scenes. What is never shown is purported shoddy work performed by TV contractors, all in the name of meeting show deadlines. We are not privy to construction being performed without proper permitting. We don’t realize that the furnishing and décor shown in the big reveal are taken away after filming. Let’s explore some proverbial laws to follow when planning to build your dream outdoor living space.
Quality takes time.
While we understand that by the time our clients contact us to begin planning their new outdoor living space, they are anxious to begin building. Second, only to the project completion date, the start date is the most anticipated facet of building a new deck, patio, or porch. It’s exciting to watch your space take shape, but there are proper steps to take. The Archadeck process is our roadmap to your successful project completion. It is in place to help us discern your outdoor living requirements, and imminently deliver the best possible solution for your home and family.
If you engage a local porch or deck builder, who says they can begin building your project tomorrow, do not hire them. Construction takes more planning than that, no exceptions.
Cheaper is not better.
At Archadeck of Akron, we build every level of outdoor living construction, from budget-friendly decks to elaborate screened porches and sunrooms. If you are engaging two or more contractors to quote your project, be certain that they are giving you an apples-to-apples comparison. Fact is, if we quote your new deck to be built with composite decking, and another contractor quotes pressure-treated pine, their quote will be much less. However, your outdoor living will be different with natural wood versus low-maintenance decking. For instance, your deck will have to be maintained annually or bi-annually; sanded and painted or stained. Also, a pressure-treated wood decking is not guaranteed to last up to 50 years.
If another contractor gives you a direct comparison quote that is MUCHLESS than ours, you can expect hidden costs, change orders during construction, fewer quality materials, or in-proper installation which were not planned for. Your Archadeck of Akron quote will come with a complete project specification list, giving your every material that will be used to build your new space – and not hidden costs, ever. Another scenario would be that the cheaper quote means you get swindled out of your hard-earned cash for poor construction or an incomplete project.
Don’t be fooled by a super-inexpensive quote – you always get what you pay for. A cheap price tag is always going to be cheap construction! Read this blog about an actual project nightmare, where we were made aware of the low bidder’s lies and shoddy work.
Don’t believe everything you see on TV.
What we have to remember is that TV shows are made first for entertainment value. Yes, that even applies to home makeover and construction shows like you see on HGTV. Producing a successful show supersedes producing the highest-quality results for the guests featured on these shows. While they may have a great aesthetic in the big reveal, many have had major construction maladies over time after their makeovers, such as flooding basements and rotting structures. At Archadeck of Akron, we promise to endeavor to build the best space for your needs, and we guarantee our construction. Our outdoor living building process is totally transparent, and we are always available to answer your questions, before, during, and after your project is complete.
Let Archadeck of Akron help you build the outdoor living space you dream of, not one that nightmares are made of. We can schedule a “virtual consultation” using video-conferencing technology. To get started, just call. You can contact Archadeck of Akron today at 330-754-1044 or email us.
If you had the chance to jump to the front of the line, would you take it? Thinking about adding a new outdoor living structure to your home this year? Akron-area homeowners who think fast and take action quickly (meaning now) will have the advantage.
Will you be among the homeowners having Archadeck of Akron design and build their outdoor living projects this year? Will you be able to enjoy that new screened porch and low-maintenance deck combination while the 2020 outdoor living season is still around? If that’s what you want, it’s time to move forward with those plans, because spring and summer are not going to wait for you. If you’ve been waiting for a better time, that better time is now.
We suspect that while you’ve been staying home more than usual lately, your need for a comfortable, pleasant outdoor living space has grown. Is that true? Have you become increasingly aware of how much more you could enjoy the outdoors at home if you added that deck and patio you’ve been dreaming about?
Akron, OH, area homeowners who continue to watch and wait for the economy to pick up again will miss out in 2020. Those who don’t give us a call very soon may not see their project built this year. You could select another builder, perhaps, but … you value Archadeck’s creative designs and high-quality craftsmanship. Will you still keep your plans on hold, even if it means having your project built in 2021 instead of this year?
Connect with Archadeck Now to See Your Project Completed This Year
This is our current reality. As the economy has slowed, homeowners have been postponing the outdoor living projects they had planned for 2020. Those who hesitate, and continue to postpone, will find themselves waiting for a spot on our construction calendar as the year progresses.
At some point soon, homeowners will realize the year is half over and they haven’t contracted with a builder yet! The patio, screened porch, or deck they thought they’d already have by this summer will still be just an idea.
Hesitation is understandable as people try to read the tea leaves to see where the economy is heading. But when things shift, and they will, we’re expecting pent up demand to create a huge backlog of work for us. So we’re reaching out to you, now, to offer you a place at the front of the line. You can get on our construction calendar for 2020 if you act now. If you wait until May/June, or until the threat of coronavirus has eased off, you may be too late for a 2020 build.

Are you looking for fun ways to enjoy a “staycation” at your home?
Many Akron-area homeowners have had to cancel vacations this year. We have several ideas that may help …
1) Dine out—at home! Don’t let vacation disruption keep you from dining out. Consider your deck or patio the perfect place to dine out, where you and your family are the only guests and you are treated royally. Cook or order your favorite foods. Bring out the good wine. And don’t skimp on dessert!
2) Order up a bigger deck! Is your deck too small? Whether you’re planning a true staycation or just need more room to move around, a bigger deck could greatly enhance the time you spend outdoors. To make the most of your deck time, you’ll need a deck with enough space for dining and a separate area for lounging.
Do you need room on the deck for your grill or smoker? Archadeck of Akron’s “comprehensive needs analysis” can help you determine how much space you need on your new deck. Our objective is to custom design the ideal deck for you and your lifestyle … which may have changed recently under Ohio’s Stay at Home Order.
3 ) Add that front porch you’ve been wanting! We are your Akron front porch builder. Sitting on a front porch is the antidote to feeling isolated these days. It’s the original social media! Assuming your front porch will be more than 6’ from the sidewalk or street, stay in touch with your neighbors as they walk by. Exchange greetings and news of the day. Whether they’re walking their dogs or just walking for good health, you’ll get to know everyone better! Add a porch swing and that front porch may become your favorite “room” in the house.
4) Plan your “official staycation” like you’re going on a trip! Make a list of movies you want to watch, museums you want to visit—virtually, of course—and books you want to read. Coordinate your cuisine with your movies and museums as though you’re visiting a different region or country each day. Schedule your days, lightly! … so by the end of a week you’ve at least made a dent in the activities you planned. You may need to extend that staycation for another week! If you don’t want to cook during your staycation, treat yourself by choosing a different restaurant for take-out each evening. It’s a great way to support local restaurants, too!
5) Get back into gardening … or discover its pleasures for the first time! Call your nearest gardening center and solicit their advice for what to plant along the edges of your patio and deck. They’ll need to know how much sun vs. shade your garden will receive so they know what plants to recommend. Many nurseries are still open for business if you order online and drive up to collect your purchases.
Container gardening is our all-time favorite! It’s manageable, doesn’t create too much of a mess, and adds vibrant color to enhance any deck or patio. Also, if you’re adding a new patio, why not include some planters in your hardscape design?
6) Re-evaluate your outdoor furniture. Is it time for a change? Envision your screened porch as a destination and furnish it accordingly. You can even treat it like a room to be designed instead of a catch-all for whatever ends up there. If you design your outdoor room like a place you’d want to visit, you’ll enjoy it all the more. You can turn that porch or patio into an exotic getaway spot. Try a couple of Adirondack chairs on your porch, deck, or patio. They’re super comfortable, relaxing, and can transport you back to your favorite lakeside memories.
7) Create your own outdoor camping experience! Relive your best camp memories and your kids will grow up knowing that stay-at-home-camp is the most fun camp of all. Gather materials for several craft activities, build your own birdhouses and tailor your crafts to include your children’s favorite things. At night grill your hot dogs over the fire in your fire pit. Don’t have a fire pit? Archadeck of Akron can design the perfect patio and fire pit for camping out at home. Don’t forget the marshmallows!
8) Plan your combination multi-functional outdoor living rooms … for our phased building program, and start by building the first phase now. Archadeck of Akron knows that some families need more than one outdoor living space to make the most of their time at home. If you crave the ultimate versatility for outdoor living, you need a screened porch, a covered porch or patio, and an open patio or deck. Or perhaps you need all four!
Each structure is perfect for certain times of the year, and when you combine them, you have the whole year covered! Sometimes you want to be protected from the sun, and sometimes you want to bask in its warmth. Sometimes you want to dine out in the open, and sometimes you need screens to keep the mosquitoes away. We can help you create the best mix of outdoor spaces for your needs and design them as a cohesive phased building program. You can move ahead with each phase as your budget allows.
Let Archadeck of Akron help you determine what kind of outdoor living structure would best meet your needs. The more you stay at home, the more you need an outdoor room that’s an inviting getaway spot. We can schedule a “virtual consultation” using video-conferencing technology. To get started, just call. You can contact Archadeck of Akron today at 330-754-1044 or email us.
Archadeck of Akron has partnered with a financing company to give our clients easier access to the outdoor living projects they may have been putting off. If your desire for a more enjoyable outdoor living space at home is competing with your budget, financing may be your answer.
How long have you been waiting for a new deck, a screened porch, or that paver patio with a fire pit? How long are you willing to keep waiting?
Many of our clients are working from home now or staying home in the evenings instead of going out like they used to. Weekends, too! A lot has changed, quickly, and that includes our new stay-at-home lifestyles. If you’ve been postponing your plans to add an outdoor living space to your home, this is the time when you may need it more than ever. What if you could stop postponing it and just make it happen?
Archadeck of Akron’s financing partner is LightStream, a division of SunTrust Bank. Our clients can use a home improvement loan from LightStream to finance the outdoor living space(s) they have in mind. Suddenly your dreams for a nice deck … or a bigger deck … or a deck-and-patio combination are within reach.
What Are Your Outdoor Living Lifestyle Goals? How Long Will You Wait?
Right now, our clients are looking for ways to add enjoyment to the new routine of staying at home. Suddenly a deck, open porch, screened porch or patio seems more necessary and less of a distant wish. Are you working from home now, or simply staying home more than you ever expected to be? It’s likely that having an outdoor living space now could make all the difference in how you feel about being there. Could that be true for you and your family?
Eventually, we’ll all get through the current pandemic and then we can entertain friends at our homes again. That day will come. How do you picture yourself enjoying your new deck then? Do you enjoy giving small dinner parties, or will you invite 3 dozen of your closest friends? When you have a new patio, will you invite the neighbors to enjoy it with you, or will you savor patio time with family the most?
If you’ve wanted a new or bigger and better outdoor living space for a while, now is the time to consider financing. It could be the answer to get you over that “someday” hurdle. When you look back on this time of Stay at Home orders and social distancing, will you remember it for pleasant days on your new screened porch? Or will you remember it as being cooped up indoors without an enjoyable outdoor living area for your family?
Let Archadeck of Akron help you plan the outdoor living structure you want with the option of financing your project. You can stop postponing that dream. We can schedule a “virtual design consultation” using video-conferencing technology. To get started, just call. You can contact Archadeck of Akron today at 330-754-1044 or email us.
If anyone tells you there’s no such thing as a high-quality, budget-friendly deck, don’t believe them. If they tell you that all Archadeck decks are too expensive for your budget, don’t believe that, either. At Archadeck of Akron, we want Akron-area budget-sensitive homeowners to know we offer custom decks on a budget designed to work for you.
Archadeck’s Craftsmanship Shines Through at Any Price
Archadeck of Akron puts our best-quality work into every deck we build, regardless of price range. While a deck with all the bells and whistles will cost more than a basic wood deck, we build both with the same level of care. Archadeck’s craftsmanship and attention to detail are not characteristics we turn on or off depending on how much you’re paying for your deck. We follow the same processes and use the same checklists regardless.
If another builder quotes you a lower price, be aware that choosing their product could cost you more in the long run. Do they have design experience? Do they carry liability insurance and workers comp? Do they always meet or exceed local building codes? Do they offer warranties on workmanship and structural integrity? Archadeck of Akron meets all of these critical requirements for a deck designer and builder—regardless of the size or price of your deck.
How Does Archadeck Build Custom Decks for Under $12K?
Archadeck has been designing and building decks since 1980. With forty years of design experience, the company has developed eight classic deck designs that are the building blocks of all of our deck projects. We call this series of 8 designs our Lifestyle Classics, and we can build each one of these decks for under $12,000. However, keep in mind size and site conditions could affect the final cost.
No, your eyes are not playing tricks on you! Archadeck of Akron can add a high-quality, well-built deck to your home for less than $12,000. Our Lifestyle Classics decks are all timeless designs, and they work well for nearly every home and yard. We’ve created a gallery of these decks under $12,000 so you can see which designs resonate with you.
First, the decks in our Lifestyle Classics series are pre-designed—but NOT pre-fabricated. These designs have already been drafted by the engineering and drafting team who create our architectural drawings/renderings at Archadeck headquarters. Using pre-approved designs saves time and money simply because these eight decks don’t need to be drafted from scratch. We do build them from scratch however, one board at a time.
Second, to keep these decks under $12,000, we build them with pressure-treated wood, our most affordable building material. Many homeowners prefer wood decks, and we build quite a few wooden decks every year. Budget-conscious homeowners who dream of having a new deck appreciate the fact that choosing to build with wood can keep that dream within reach.
Not Just Decks, but Custom Decks for Akron-area Homeowners
Now you know how Archadeck of Akron can build your new deck for under $12K. You also need to know that we customize our Lifestyle Classics decks to meet each client’s specific needs. What does that mean?
It means we don’t build cookie-cutter decks. Yes, these decks are pre-designed, but since every client’s home is different, we make adjustments to be sure the deck you choose fits your house. We won’t just say, “Close enough!” We don’t compromise on quality, good looks, or function. In addition, during our design consultation, you have the opportunity to request additional customization.
The elements that determine the cost of any deck include its size and the materials we use to build it. It’s possible that your desire for additional customization may take the price of your deck to more than $12,000. For example, if you have your heart set on low-maintenance composite decking, we can use a composite decking product instead of pressure-treated pine. That change in materials will increase the deck cost to more than $12,000. This composite deck, however, will still be less expensive than a composite deck that’s larger and designed from scratch. You’ll save money with one of our Lifestyle Classics regardless of what materials you choose.
We’ll be completely transparent with you when it comes to your deck cost. As we talk about customization, we’ll let you know what kinds of customization will push the cost over $12K and what customization will not. We won’t begin ordering materials and scheduling construction until both parties have signed a contract that states the cost of your deck.

Would you like to have a screened porch or open porch that’s lofty and airy? Or would you prefer a porch that’s comforting and cozy and wraps itself around you like a soft blanket? Those are not the only two options, of course! When you work with Archadeck of Akron to design and build your new porch, we create a custom design just for you.
If you’re looking to add a one-size-fits-all porch to your home, we may not be the right fit for you. We help our clients choose just the right design features to create the ideal screened porch or open porch for their home and lifestyle. By drawing from their personal style and the porch amenities they admire, each client benefits by having a porch design uniquely their own.
Popular Porch Custom Design Features
Did you respond “Yes!” to our initial mention of the lofty and airy porch? If so, the porch design features that interest you most might be a gable roof, open rafters, cathedral ceiling, and vaulted ceiling.
Gable roof. This popular roof style isn’t always tall enough for a vaulted ceiling, but it is usually open at one end, contributing an open and airy feel. The open gable end works equally well on an open porch or screened porch.
Open rafters. Exposed beams can make your porch ceiling feel higher than it actually is. Open rafters pair well with a gable roof. A favorite open rafter design is called a king truss—originally a structural feature but today it can be purely decorative.
Cathedral ceiling. The high, lofty cathedral style ceiling features symmetrical slopes on each side of a center point or ridge. The pitch of the ceiling mirrors the pitch of the roof.
Vaulted ceiling. Less formal than a cathedral ceiling, and not necessarily symmetrical, a vaulted ceiling is a great way to create that pleasing, open porch design.
If you like to maximize all your options, consider a gable roof, open rafters, and a cathedral or vaulted ceiling with a ceiling fan, too. This is the trifecta of open and airy porch design. Your custom screened or open porch by Archadeck of Akron will be the envy of everyone who enters your home.
Akron Custom Porch Design Options at Ground Level
Look down now from that lofty, open porch ceiling and consider the porch railing or knee wall. If your porch is less than 30 in. above the ground, a railing or knee wall around the sides of your porch is not required. Many of our clients choose to incorporate railings anyway because they frame your space, visually, and become a prominent design element. Scanning the many railing designs on the market, you’re likely to find several that you want. Then all you have to do is decide which one to use!
Railing manufacturers offer many designs in a wide variety of materials. From wood and composite rails to iron, aluminum, or PVC, you’ll be able to select the material and color for the look you want. In the spirit of creating your custom porch design, you can also mix and match materials for railings. For example, many homeowners choose wood, composite, or PVC for the top and bottom rail and iron or aluminum for balusters or pickets.
When the infill of a knee wall/railing is filled with solid panels instead of balusters, this design gives you a bit of privacy on your screened or open porch. A solid knee wall also serves as a barrier to keep rambunctious children and pets from pushing through your screens!
Customize Your Porch with Your Favorite Amenities
TVs are almost a standard feature on Akron porches as families gather on the porch to watch movies together and sports fans enjoy watching their games outside. We can add provisions to your porch for installing a TV. Of course, every porch needs more than a few electrical outlets and at least one ceiling fan.
Fireplaces—gas burning or wood burning—are extremely popular porch amenities! Just the sight of a fireplace makes you want to spend more time in this outdoor room. It’s hard to keep a chilly porch warm with a fireplace, though, because heat dissipates as cold air rushes in.
Let’s Not Forget Custom Porch Screens
Akron-area screened porch builder Archadeck of Akron uses SCREENEZE for our screened porches. We have found that their BETTERVUE® screen really does deliver a better view, and they have pet-friendly screening, too. We’ve written about the quality of these amazing screens on our web page about SCREENEZE porch systems. Our clients love its 10-year manufacturer’s product warranty. SCREENEZE screens come in four colors—white, sand, bronze, and clay—offering you another way to customize your screened porch design.
Let Archadeck of Akron work with you to create the perfect custom screen porch or open porch for your home. To get started, just call. You can contact Archadeck of Akron today at 330-754-1044 or email us.
When it comes to planning your anticipated outdoor living space addition, how often do you find yourself thinking… “if I just had an unlimited budget”?
This is something we often hear during our initial consultation with homeowners when we ask what they envision as their ideal outdoor living space. It’s a common misconception that the perfect outdoor living space is beyond affordable. Archadeck of Akron wants you to know you don’t have to delay your ideal backyard any longer. We offer a phased building program that allows you to construct your outdoor living space combination project in phases as your lifestyle and budget permit.
This is how our phased building program works:
We start by working directly with you, the client, to the design of your ideal backyard retreat on paper as the “master plan” including all structures to be incorporated within the design. With this complete project design in hand, phase one is selected. This is most often the portion of the design closest to the home, if your design encompasses an attached structure, this will maximize the structural anchoring of this entire space to the residence.
A master plan
A clear “master plan” allows Archadeck to work out engineering, designing and building specifics for your complete outdoor space in phases permitting more efficient future additions or amendments. To ensure a unified outdoor environment, the structural integrity, traffic flow and ultimate function of each portion of the structure are priority considerations during each phase of building. Additionally, the advance planning of your backyard design saves time and money as it enables us to work closely with any supplemental contractors you may need for this project (i.e. utility contractors, pool company or landscaper). As the homeowner, having this freedom to build your ideal backyard in stages makes it easier on your budget and lifestyle.
Breaking it down
Prior to breaking ground, we will create a detailed project scope just for you, as we do for all of our clients, whether we are building one outdoor structure or a combination outdoor space. This outline of the project’s highlights is especially vital, as it gives you a conceptual idea of your project as a whole and includes a detailed breakdown of the construction stages. We have found this to be the most valuable way to ensure no detail is overlooked.
If your intended outdoor space is going to include more than one structure, such as an outdoor living combination of a deck, screened porch and/or hardscape, for example, then each separate structure will have its own distinct specification and materials list. This is just one of the many ways we are able to deliver the best service and product to our customers. We set the standards high because we want to make sure our customers are informed in every phase of their project, especially when the project is being built over time.
Phased building with Archadeck of Akron allows you to feel like you have a new backyard during each stage of your dream outdoor living space construction. Much like many of our completed phased building projects, there is usually room for additional outdoor living area in the future, such as the integration of a fire pit and seating or a pergola addition to your new deck or patio. No matter which structure pairing or combination you choose, once your space is complete you are sure to enjoy all the outdoor living enjoyment to come!
If you have a vision of your dream backyard but you’re not ready to complete it all at one time, our phased building program is the perfect answer. We can bring your ideal backyard to life one beautiful stage at a time! You can contact Archadeck of Akron today at 330-754-1044 or email us to learn more.
Ahhh, lakefront living, the good life—and double that if you have a deck overlooking the lake—but what do you do for shade? Archadeck of Akron has the answer.
Our clients have a lakefront deck in Portage Lakes, OH, with a large tree nearby that provided intermittent shade. That’s not nearly enough shade, though! The sun moves, the tree branches sway, and while it looked idyllic, the homeowners found their lakefront deck too hot under the summer sun. Nor did the tree provide protection in rainy weather.
A Simple Shade Solution for this Portage Lakes Deck
Fighting the sun can sap your enjoyment of a deck, and staying indoors ruins it altogether. Archadeck of Akron had the answer for these clients, and it was as simple as a roof. Can you put a roof over a deck? Sure you can, and it’s not as unusual as you might think.
A roof structure over a deck makes perfect sense in Portage Lakes—or anywhere you have a deck that gets too much sun. If you want to enjoy your deck more often, add shade! Not only will you beat the sun, a roof will allow you to use the deck even when it’s rainy outdoors.
Roof Structure is Budget-Friendly; Guaranteed Shade, Priceless
While Archadeck of Akron is the premier custom deck builder in Portage Lakes and the entire Akron area, these clients already had a great deck. We were there to bring shade—reliable, guaranteed, dependable shade—and protection from inclement weather.
The roof we added over this lakefront deck is a real roof. It’s tied into their existing roof, and it’s as solid and dependable as the roof on their home. This deck’s gable roof is supported by top-quality posts and beams. We built the interior, the ceiling, with v-groove pressure-treated pine. The roof features exposed rafters as well as soffits and gutters matching the home. It offers the ultimate protection from both sun and rain so the family can enjoy their lakefront deck much more often.
Never again will these Portage Lakes homeowners gaze up at their deck-side tree and wish for more shade or protection from rain. Thanks to Archadeck of Akron’s custom design and quality construction, their deck has all the overhead protection they could need.
Do you need a shade structure, covered deck, or covered porch? Let Archadeck of Akron design the perfect structure to enhance your enjoyment of the outdoors at your home. To get started, just call. You can contact Archadeck of Akron today at 330-754-1044 or email us.
If you haven’t worked with Archadeck of Akron yet and you aren’t quite convinced we stand out in the crowd, this story is for you. “The Archadeck Difference” affects our working relationship with our clients in several ways, always to the client’s benefit.
In the case of this Akron, OH, front entryway, our comprehensive needs analysis helped the homeowners re-evaluate the project they consulted us for. They initially called us to explore adding a new deck to the front of their home. As we studied the situation, it appeared that a deck wasn’t necessarily what they needed at the front of their home.
Archadeck Brings Value by Listening to You
Does it sound like we twisted the client’s arm or talked them out of the deck they wanted? That would not be an accurate description of the situation. The Archadeck design consultant simply spent some extra time with the homeowners talking about what kind of project they wanted – and why. Would a new deck in this location enhance their enjoyment of the home? Was the front of this house the ideal place for a recreational outdoor space?
Please don’t misunderstand. As a professional custom deck builder, Archadeck of Akron does not object, in principle, to adding a deck onto the front of your home. Your home’s floor plan may offer a desirable traffic flow from the inside out to a front deck. The layout of this home, however, did not work effectively with a front deck. Our design consultant asked the homeowners the right questions. And we listened.
Archadeck, Your Akron Deck Builder – and More Than a Deck Builder
Most deck builders would have been poised to build these clients another deck, no questions asked. Archadeck of Akron is different in that we offer much more. Out-of-the-box, innovative, forward-thinking ideas are part of who we are.
When we met the clients for their design consultation, we offered insight and suggestions. It appeared that other types of structures could meet their needs. We presented the idea of replacing their deck with a hardscape paver sidewalk and custom front entry landing. A traditional entryway with an attractive hardscape landing would speak to their needs and achieve the look they had in mind.
At Archadeck of Akron, our extensive experience in all kinds of outdoor construction projects gives us the ability to go beyond what the client is thinking. We are keen on listening carefully and offering ideas. We’re in a position to offer professional advice and opinions. Isn’t that why you want a professional to design your outdoor living space?
Archadeck Custom Design Enhances Curb Appeal
We removed the existing deck, which was awkwardly placed on the house to begin with, and replaced it with an attractive front entrance. Using Unilock pavers, we created a landing outside the home’s front door and a sidewalk from the driveway to the landing. It’s a clean, streamlined design that opens up the space in a way a deck could not.
With a row of pavers along the front of the home, too, we marked off beds for shrubs or flowers. Before long, the homeowners will have an attractive softscape to complement their new hardscape entryway.
This unusual home improvement project illustrates that Archadeck of Akron is more than just a deck builder. We’re more than a patio or porch builder, too. We are YOUR custom outdoor living space builder. Give us a try!
Let Archadeck of Akron help you determine what kind of outdoor living structure would best meet your needs. We’ll custom design the perfect project for your home and build it with craftsmanship you’ll be proud to show off. To get started, just call. You can contact Archadeck of Akron today at 330-754-1044 or email us.
You probably know that Archadeck of Akron is a premier deck builder in the Akron area, but have you heard about redecking? These Copley area residents called on us to replace their wood deck. We gave them a new low-maintenance deck, but perhaps not in the way you might think.
When it comes to replacing wood decks, most homeowners probably think that it’s going to be a complete tear-down and rebuilding of their entire structure. Many times, that’s exactly what we do. However, there are instances, where we can more simply redeck an existing deck structure to give our clients the deck they long for. This Akron redecking project gave these homeowners the new deck they wished for, without having to completely demolish their old deck.
Archadeck of Akron was able to tear off the wood decking to thoroughly examine the existing deck structure. At times, we can still utilize the structure – sometimes, it is necessary to add or replace support components – but your deck could still be structurally sound, even if your decking needs replacing.
We replaced the wood decking with AZEK Harvest Collection decking in Kona. What does this new AZEK decking offer these homeowners? This PVC decking offers a beautiful wood-look finish, rich wood color, and a 50-year limited fade and stain warranty. Not only that, but AZEK decking is resistant to drops and spills, and remains cooler to the touch in full sun than other decking choices. And forget about annual sanding, staining, sealing, or painting!
— After; AZEK Kona decking and TimberTech Evolutions Rail
We installed beautiful and low-maintenance TimberTech Evolution Rail, complete with a Kona top rail and additional drink rail. With beautiful and functional deck lighting, this deck is all set for many years of entertaining and private relaxing.
This project wasn’t all about the deck
In addition to the redecking project, these homeowners were in need of a couple of additional updates for their outdoor living space. We replaced their fence and added pavers around their hot tub area.
Perhaps you have been looking at your own aging wood deck, wishing to replace it with a new low-maintenance deck. Archadeck of Akron can look at your existing deck structure to determine if your deck is a candidate for redecking. We can discuss options for expanding your deck’s footprint, or changing the shape. Having a beautiful and low-maintenance deck could be easier than you think!
Are you ready to discuss redecking your existing wood deck? Archadeck of Akron is here for your. To get started, just call. You can contact Archadeck of Akron today at 330-754-1044 or email us.
You’re looking at a front porch in Akron, OH, that will change the way you see front porches from now on. When you think of the traditional front porch, does it have steps? Does it have railings and pickets? Guess what? Archadeck of Akron wants you to know you can add a front porch to your home even if your front door is flush with the ground. No steps or railing required.
Why You May Want a Front Porch
It’s widely accepted that having a front porch will increase a home’s curb appeal. When you hear that phrase, you may think it only applies when you’re listing your home for sale. Curb appeal is more than a sales tool. Curb appeal is the way your home greets your neighbors, your friends and family, and you, every time you return home. Curb appeal is what your home would see if it could look in the mirror.
Adding a front porch to your home is a way to refresh its appearance, to give it a makeover. It’s one component of the aesthetics of your home’s exterior, which could also include your home’s façade and landscaping. Maybe last year you painted your front door and shutters a new color. This year, add a front porch!
Why You Need a Front Porch
Archadeck of Akron builds front porches that are attractive and practical. Does your home lack a front porch or portico, with little more than the eaves to keep you dry? Then you know what it’s like to stand at the door in the pouring rain, fumbling for your keys, while the mail you’re holding gets soaked. You know what it’s like to come home to delivered packages that have become waterlogged while you were out. Do you cringe and apologize when you open the door to welcome friends and see they forgot to carry an umbrella on a rainy day? You need a front porch to keep these things – and people – dry.
Our clients who own the home you see here had an area of brick across the front of their home, basically a front patio. They loved sitting here outside and had outdoor furniture for that purpose. With no roof or cover, their furniture was unprotected and was hard to keep clean of dirt and debris. Pillows got wet. It became a chore to keep their outdoor sitting area usable. They needed a front porch to protect their leisure space.
A front porch actually protects more than furniture, packages, and people (and pets!). It protects your front door from fading in direct sunlight. If your home is level with the yard, like this one, a porch will protect the front of your home from splattering rain and dirt.
Archadeck of Akron Custom Designs Front Porches
Every porch we design is different, each one custom-designed to meet the homeowner’s needs, honor their preferences, and fit their budget. From size, shape, and materials, your new front porch won’t look just like this one, nor will it look like the porches of your neighbors. You are unique, so the porch we design for you will be uniquely yours. Have you recently purchased a home that doesn’t have a front porch? Adding a custom porch is a great way to put your own stamp on the home’s aesthetics!
Our clients for this porch project chose cedar for their new front porch. We used pressure treated posts with a cedar wrap. For the porch roof, they selected black aluminum. With a metal roof that matches the color of the shutters, this porch really pops!
If you grew up with a front porch, you know the special appeal of sitting out front where you can greet neighbors and visit. It was our grandparents’ favorite activity after chores were done. Let’s bring back front porch living!
Would a front porch keep your guests dry, give you a comfortable place to sit outdoors, and protect your outdoor furniture? Let Archadeck of Akron custom design a new porch to boost your home’s curb appeal. To get started, just call. You can contact Archadeck of Akron today at 330-754-1044 or email us.
When you see the exterior of this beautifully rustic 3-season room addition in Louisville, OH, you have no idea what’s inside. Until you open the door and step in, you’ll get no clues about the style of this outdoor room’s interior. That’s by design.
Designing the Exterior: We Match Your Home’s Materials
The first thing you notice about the exterior of this three-season room is that it matches the home’s exterior perfectly. Archadeck of Akron makes the effort to design your outdoor room addition so it blends with your home and doesn’t look added on. The siding, the size and shape of the windows, and the roof all look as though they’re original to the home.
Designing the Interior: Your Personal Style Drives the Design
Inside, the mood and feel of this outdoor room are completely determined by the homeowners’ tastes and preferences. Here you see a room designed to reflect a rustic cabin or lodge, exactly what the clients wanted. How did we do it? Materials. It’s all determined by the materials we use in your outdoor room’s custom design.
You – the client – select your materials according to the style of outdoor room you want to enjoy. Each decision you make about the materials to finish your outdoor room – including the ceiling, walls, and flooring – takes you another step closer.
The rustic appeal of knotty pine is the overarching design element in this Louisville, OH, three-season room. The tongue-and-groove knotty pine ceiling is prominent. This theme continues with the wood between the windows and above the windows.
The wall of stacked stone between the 3-season room and the home’s interior confirms the rustic lodge setting. Montana, perhaps, or Idaho? The stacked stone adorns the low wall below the windows, too. Finally, the homeowners’ décor, their furniture, window valences, and accessories, complete the impression they’re on vacation in their favorite cabin in the woods.
Windows Make This a 3-Season Room
If the homeowners had wanted a screened porch, we would have completed the walls with screens. Instead, we used Pellas Encompass windows.
You Can’t Judge a 3-Season Room by its Exterior
What specific mood and feel would you like to convey in your outdoor room? Archadeck of Akron can make it happen by custom-designing an outdoor room with the materials you prefer. We could use a convertible screen and window system in a room with a tile floor and open rafters to create an entirely different kind of outdoor room. It would still be a 3-season room, but it would be your 3-season room, designed just for you to create the ambiance you want.
The range of custom designs we are able to build is quite extensive, from rustic and woodsy to modern and contemporary. Meanwhile, the exterior of your outdoor room, designed to match your home’s exterior, won’t give away what awaits inside.
Would a three-season room provide the relaxing “getaway” space you’ve been wanting? Let Archadeck of Akron work with you to custom design your ideal three-season room. To get started, just call. You can contact Archadeck of Akron today at 330-754-1044 or email us.
Looking at this beautiful project, you can guess our recent clients in Uniontown, OH, don’t do anything half-way. When it came time to design their ideal outdoor living space, what they ordered was a top-of-the-line combination deck and 3-season room. What they got was an exquisite bi-level outdoor space they can use almost year-round, rain or shine.
Making the most of their outdoor time is important to these Uniontown homeowners, as you can see. Deck and porch builderArchadeck of Akron was thrilled to work with them to create this dual-powered home addition. Like many homeowners, they wanted to be able to enjoy the outdoors and connect with nature regardless of season or weather conditions. Now, only the coldest days will drive them indoors.
Originally, these homeowners had a large deck off the back of their home. Archadeck of Akron removed the deck and rebuilt a portion in order to provide both the open air and conditioned all-season outdoor living space they desired.
Combining a Deck and 3-Season Room
If you’re finding it hard to choose between adding a deck, screened porch, or three-season room to your home, give Archadeck of Akron a call. We can help you weigh those options. We’re experts at helping you identify what’s most important to you and your family in an outdoor living space. Where will you enjoy spending the most time? What functions will your outdoor space need to serve?
Sometimes a client comes to the conclusion that it will take more than one kind of structure to meet their family’s outdoor living needs. That’s when a combination outdoor space makes the most sense. When the weather is delightful, not too hot, not too cool, a deck is idyllic. Sitting outdoors in an uncovered space, feeling to the breeze and the sun’s warmth, watching bees and butterflies and hearing the sounds of nature … this is bliss.
When it’s a little too warm outside, you may prefer a roof’s protection from the sun’s rays without being cooped up indoors. That’s when you need a porch – preferably with a ceiling fan. When it’s raining, a roof will keep you dry while porch screens allow you to see and smell the pleasure of rain. When it’s cool enough to close the windows, that’s when a 3-season room lets you turn your “porch” into a protected space to keep out the cold.
When your combination outdoor living space includes a roofed structure – a covered porch, screened porch, or 3-season room – you’ll always find a way to connect with nature.
Wooden Deck and Wood-filled 3-Season Room
These homeowners in Uniontown, OH, prefer the look and feel of natural wood, and it shows. They chose pressure-treated pine for their natural wood deck, and visually this deck is a celebration of wood. The main deck area is free of railings because it’s low-to-grade, and all you see is wood. From the wide wooden steps on both sides of the deck, to the custom wood planters under a row of windows, the theme here is wood.
Step up to the deck’s second level and you’ll find more beautiful features in wood. On one side, wood railings provide safety, and vertical wood skirting hides the under-deck area. On the other side, custom wood planters match the deck’s skirting, and built-in (wood) bench seating provides a delightful conversation nook.
The adjacent three-season room is also a celebration of wood’s beauty with gorgeous hardwood floors and an exquisite poplar tongue-and-groove wood ceiling. The room is finished with sheetrock, but don’t mistake this for an interior room! The bank of windows overlooking the deck, and windows on either side of the porch, make it clear that screens will see heavy use during porch weather. Slide these windows open, and the room instantly becomes a screened porch!
Windows under the gable roof allow extra light into the area, as do the amazing lead glass doors on each side leading out to the deck. With a ceiling fan and recessed can lighting, the homeowners have brought their indoor comforts outdoors.

If you’re a homeowner who hasn’t put “the Archadeck difference” to work for you, then you may not know what you’re missing. It’s a phrase we use a lot around here because we take it seriously. Far too many homeowners in the Akron area, in Ohio, and around the country have had bad experiences with contractors. We work hard every day to make sure we stand out from that crowd.
Archadeck of Akron has earned a stellar reputation for professionalism and top-quality work in the outdoor living construction business – as have all Archadeck locations. That’s why we call your experience with us “the Archadeck difference.” We demonstrate that difference with every deck, porch, and patio we design and build.
If you’re a homeowner and haven’t had a bad experience with a contractor, count your blessings. It’s something you never forget when you suffer financially by paying someone for work that is not performed, not performed timely, or not performed correctly. In many cases, you then have to pay another contractor to complete or redo the work.
“Remodelers Rank Second in Consumer Complaints” – What?!
Remodeling.net reports that the home improvement industry is one of the worst when it comes to consumer complaints. The only industry U.S. consumers complained about more in 2018 was the auto industry, according to the annual survey conducted by the Consumer Federation of America.
While the home improvement industry ranked 2nd in terms of the number of consumer complaints last year, it took top position for worst complaints. That’s because of financial damage incurred, disruption to lives – when a client’s home is rendered unlivable – and emotional distress.
Look on the Bright Side: You Have Archadeck of Akron!
The Archadeck difference is at your disposal when you trust Archadeck of Akron with your outdoor living project. If you’ve worked with other home improvement contractors, you’ll notice the difference right away in the thoughtful consideration we give to every inquiry we receive. You might be shocked at how often potential clients tell us they are surprised how promptly and professionally we responded to their email or phone call. We do it because it’s the right thing to do. Often we forget that not everyone works this way.
Respectful and timely communication is only the beginning of the Archadeck difference. The difference is evident in every aspect of our business, from the care we put into planning to the exceptional quality of our work.
The Value of a Checklist: Part of The Archadeck of Akron Difference
We have more than one checklist on every outdoor living project we design and build. If you’re not a huge fan of checklists, you may think they’re just one more form of paperwork. Not around here at Archadeck of Akron! The checklists hold us to a higher standard; remind us not to skip steps, and keep our “processes” front and center. Our processes – yes, more than one – keep us on track, organized, and conscientious. Not only do our processes improve our efficiency and keep your job site safe, neat, and tidy, they also reduce the potential for construction delays.
The checklist you see here is one you might use to interview us and any other contractor you are thinking about working with. Can any other builder match us point for point on this checklist? If you look closely at each item, the answer is, “No, they cannot.”
Take #8, for example, “Exact price for project, no estimates.” Archadeck of Akron does not give estimates. Our process starts with a design consultation, a needs analysis, and a thorough site survey. We will design your project and identify the materials you want in order to arrive at a specific quote for your job. Not an estimate. And we do this before you have signed a contract or made a payment.
Insurance and Warranties are More than Just Fine Print
Items 10 and 11 on this checklist go hand-in-hand: General liability insurance and workers compensation insurance. Do not assume every contractor carries adequate insurance. It is essential that if a builder does not offer that information, you must ask for it. Archadeck will provide you with our insurance information before you have to ask for it.
Numbers 2, 3, and 4 may look like three ways of saying the same thing, but they aren’t. #2 means our job specs, our contract with you, and our warranty are all in writing. #3 tells you your project will be covered by a 5-year structural warranty and a 1-year warranty covering workmanship. #4 says we guarantee your project will be completed no matter what. If for some reason Archadeck of Akron were to go out of business, the Archadeck corporate office would send another Archadeck builder to finish the project. Guaranteed in writing. How awesome is that? Every time a contractor is hired it is like gambling for a homeowner. With Archadeck the hand is stacked in your favor.

How do you know when your deck needs a makeover? That term, makeover, could mean many things. If you’re talking about makeup, hairstyle, and fashion, then a makeover refers to the whole nine yards! (Or so they tell me … ) If you’re talking about a deck, a makeover could encompass the deck’s surface material, the color, the railings or stairs … and beyond.
A deck makeover, ideally, means improving everything you don’t like about your deck. Akron deck builder Archadeck of Akron has heard our share of complaints when clients talk about replacing an old deck.
Do you grumble every time you try to set your beverage on the deck railing, because the railing cap is rounded on top? That’s something to address with your deck makeover. Do you wish your deck stairs were built on the left side of the deck, instead of the right? Deck makeover! Do your railing pickets look old and bulky compared to today’s ultra-thin balusters or cable railing?
The project pictured here is a perfect example of a deck makeover in Cuyahoga Falls, OH. Like many homeowners, these clients requested a deck makeover because their wood deck had reached the end of its useful life. Is your wood deck so worn and faded that no amount of sanding and staining will bring it back? If the deck cannot be resuscitated, it needs to be replaced. It’s time to talk with deck builder Archadeck of Akron about what you want in a new deck.
Questions to Ask Yourself Before a Deck Makeover
The best deck makeover is one that achieves your ideal outdoor living space. If you could change anything about your deck, what would it be? Now is the time to collect those ideas:
Do you like the railing style you have, or is it time for a change? Railing style is one of the most obvious ways to update the look of your deck.
Would you enjoy having a “drink rail” – a flat rail cap that’s wide enough to hold cups, glasses, and bottles?
Is your deck large enough, or would expanding it with additional square footage to make your deck more functional?
Do you like the stair placement on your deck, or would moving the stairs make them more convenient?
Would you be interested in adding a pergola over the deck for shade and/or for a place to hang ceiling fans and lighting?
Would built-in deck lighting on the stair risers and along the railing make your deck more functional?
Of course, this list is not exhaustive! Let these questions serve as your starting point if you choose to conduct your own research. If you’re replacing an older deck, the industry has seen quite a few design improvements over the years that you might not be aware of. We have more “bells and whistles” we can add to a deck these days. We’ll be happy to show you some of the newer deck design possibilities when we meet with you for your no-obligation Archadeck design consultation.
Does Redecking or Resurfacing Count as a Deck Makeover?
Absolutely, it does! Redecking, also called resurfacing, is one of the more cost-effective ways to give your deck a brand new look. Archadeck of Akron does quite a few redecking projects. When we replace the deck surface, stairs, and railings, but leave the original support structure intact, that’s called redecking or resurfacing. Redecking saves money because you don’t have to pay for new materials to hold the deck up, nor do you pay for labor to rebuild the substructure.
The caveat about redecking is that not all decks are candidates for redecking. Before we can commit to redecking at your home, we would need to examine the support structure under your current deck. If it’s still sturdy enough, or can meet today’s building codes with reasonable measures, you’re in luck; redecking will lower your costs.
Cuyahoga Falls, OH, Homeowners Choose Redecking – and More!
The deck you see here represents a deck makeover that combines redecking with several of the options listed among the questions above: low-maintenance materials, expansion, and new railings.
These homeowners were ready to make the switch to low-maintenance synthetic decking. They chose Cypress-color capped polymer decking boards from AZEK’s Vintage Collection. For the fascia board just under the deck surface, along the outer edge, they selected the Acacia color from AZEK’s Arbor Collection.
Our clients needed a bigger deck. Regardless of the reason, when you need more space, you just need more space. Whether you’re entertaining more guests outdoors or you want distinct spaces for dining and lounging, for example, additional square footage can make a huge difference. Having more space on a deck simply makes it more functional.
The beautiful white railings you see here are aluminum railings from Preferred Aluminum Railing. Today’s pickets are thinner than older railing styles, allowing more visibility. An added bonus: aluminum railings qualify as low-maintenance materials because, like composite or synthetic decking, they won’t need to be sanded and painted.
Is your deck ready for a makeover? Let Archadeck of Akron work with you to design the deck you’ve always wanted. To get started, just call. You can contact Archadeck of Akron today at 330-754-1044 or email us.
A huge advantage to working with Archadeck of Akron is our versatility and wide range of expertise, as this Uniontown, OH, homeowner discovered recently. While some companies build hardscapes and others build decks, Archadeck of Akron can do it all – and extremely well. You don’t sacrifice an ounce of builder know-how or competence when you work with us, no matter what kind of outdoor living structure you want!
Not Sure What Outdoor Living Space to Build?
If you’re having trouble deciding whether to add a deck, screened porch, or patio to your home, you don’t need to call three different companies to quote the job. Archadeck of Akron has quite a bit of experience designing and building all of these structures. We can give you an accurate quote on any of them. We can also evaluate your property and recommend which structure would work best for your setting if you’re undecided. This alone sets us apart from the other deck builders and hardscape installers in the Akron, Uniontown, and Green, OH areas.
Most homeowners calling Archadeck of Akron for a free design consultation know what they want. Recently this homeowner in the Green area of Uniontown, OH, called us to replace her patio steps and add a railing for stability. Since she hired a hardscape company to do the original project she ended up with a hardscape step that had some tall steps. We were in complete agreement that adding a railing to her patio steps would increase her safety there.
We saw why she wanted to replace those steps! They were made of pavers matching her patio, and you could say they were “pretty.” But they weren’t safe or practical. The two steps fanned out in a half-moon shape, and the top step was too small. A step that size and shape provides limited footing, forcing anyone coming in or out of the home to be very careful.
Given the half-moon design, it wasn’t possible to make the top step larger without making the bottom step larger, too. There wasn’t sufficient space for a larger, rounded design. As we considered the options, we recommended steps made of decking materials rather than pavers or stone. A patio company wouldn’t have been versatile enough to consider this possibility.
Beautiful TimberTech Steps for Safety and Stability!
While Archadeck of Akron is a deck and hardscape builder, we didn’t recommend a deck or a hardscape for this project. The homeowner didn’t need a deck. What she needed was a landing and a set of uniform steps, wider than the ones she had, with a sturdy railing. We also went with 4 steps instead of 3 to shorten the height of the steps some for added safety. The perfect solution was TimberTech low-maintenance composite decking for the steps, and a low-maintenance railing, too.
The client selected TimberTechPRO decking from their Terrain Collection in the Brown Oak color. This deep, rich color is a perfect contrast to her home’s light siding. For the stair risers and railing she chose white, so the project ties in visually with the home’s white trim. By choosing low-maintenance materials, the homeowner will never need to worry about the steps and railing becoming weathered. TimberTech PRO Terrain decking is capped on all four sides to resist fading, moisture, insect damage, and scratches.
Call Archadeck for Your Deck and Patio Combination, Too!
Perhaps your problem isn’t “either/or.” Perhaps you need quotes on both a deck and patio because you want to add both to your home. There is so much to love about this Cuyahoga Falls, OH, deck, including the cost to replace the original wood deck with low-maintenance decking, stairs, and railings. If Archadeck of Akron can save our clients money by redecking instead of replacing the entire deck structure, we will!
What do you love about this elevated deck? The homeowners love their large second-story deck with a view. They love the dry under-deck patio where they have total shade and protection from rain showers. They love the way their deck stairs wrap around the side of the house rather than sticking out into the yard.
Most of all, these homeowners love that deck builder Archadeck of Akron was able to suggest redecking when their old pressure-treated wood deck needed to be replaced.
Redecking with Archadeck of Akron
The clients’ original pressure-treated wood deck was showing its age and needed to be replaced. Homeowners who don’t know about redecking may assume their builder will have to tear down their old deck and build an entire new structure. Sometimes that is the case, but often redecking is an option that provides beautiful results at a lower cost.
Not all deck builders will offer redecking. Some would rather you believe they have to build a new deck from the ground up. Archadeck of Akron wants you to know redecking is a money-saving option that may be right for your deck. We won’t know for sure until we inspect your deck’s support structure. Because the substructure hasn’t been exposed to the elements, many times we can reuse that substructure and simply replace the deck surface, stairs, and railings.
Will You Make the Switch to Low-Maintenance Decking?
When you choose redecking to replace your wooden deck, you can redeck with wood or you can choose the low-maintenance option of composite or synthetic decking. Some homeowners prefer a wood deck, and there is nothing wrong with that.
These Cuyahoga Falls, OH, homeowners were tired of wood deck maintenance and ready to enjoy the low-maintenance lifestyle. For their deck’s new surface and stairs, they selected TimberTech deck boards. TimberTech PRO decking is capped on all four sides for extra protection from moisture, insect damage, fading, stains, and scratches. The boards in the TimberTech PRO Legacy Collection feature a hand-scraped texture with natural wood tones.
For their new railings, the clients selected a Westbury Riveria III aluminum railing in Chocolate. These distinctive railings are – you guessed it – low maintenance, too.
Are you thinking about replacing your wood deck? Whether you want another wood deck or you’re ready to switch to low-maintenance composite decking, let us determine whether your deck is a candidate for redecking. To get started, just call. You can contact Archadeck of Akron today at 330-754-1044 or email us.
Today’s featured deck project in Northfield, OH, illustrates that when it comes to low-maintenance decking, brands matter. Homeowners have heard that synthetic decking doesn’t fade, and they have begun to take that assumption for granted. What’s the problem with that?
Did Your Decking Come with a Warranty?
First, not all decking manufacturers claim their products won’t fade. While the best decking brands make this claim, not all brands do. Lesser-known brands may hope you’ll associate their product with the excellent reputations earned by the big guys.
Second, not every manufacturer backs a “fade resistant” claim with a warranty. Keep in mind companies cannot promise your deck won’t fade. What they can do is guarantee that if your decking fades under normal conditions, they will replace it. When a top-tier company like AZEK provides such a warranty, you know they’re confident their decking products won’t fade. Otherwise, they would lose money fulfilling that warranty and would soon be out of business.
Off-Brand, Low-Quality Decking is Engineered to Disappoint
The Northfield, OH, homeowners whose deck you see pictured here purchased a home with a deck already installed by the builder. Because it was made with composite decking, they would naturally have assumed its color would last. They were surprised and extremely disappointed when the color on their composite deck faded tremendously.
— Faded deck before Archadeck of Akron replaced the deck with top-quality AZEK synthetic decking.
Home buyers may see a composite deck and think they won’t need to replace it for many years. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. At this Northfield, OH, property, the composite decking brand the builder used was an inferior product. It’s certainly not a brand that premier deck builder Archadeck of Akron would use or recommend.
Replacing Builder-Grade Decking with Color that Lasts
The clients called Northfield, OH, deck builder Archadeck of Akron to replace their faded deck with color-fast composite decking they can trust. Our brand selection for this project was AZEK, a company with the best fade-and-stain warranties in the industry. Loving the rich colors of the Harvest collection, the homeowners chose the Kona color.
— Stunning new AZEK deck by Archadeck of Akron.
With AZEK on their deck, these homeowners will not have to worry about fading. AZEK’s steadfast colors are engineered to stay true over time. This synthetic decking is backed by a 50-Year Limited Fade & Stain warranty against fading. Each decking board is made of 100% PVC (both in the core and surface).
Redecking Can Be a Money-Saving Option
The deck surface replacement process is called redecking. Since the deck’s original support structure was still sturdy, the homeowners avoided the expense of replacing the entire structure. On this particular project, we were able to reuse the existing low-maintenance vinyl rail. With low-maintenance railing and low-maintenance decking, the homeowners can relax, knowing their outdoor living space will look just as great for many years to come.
Whether you are looking to add a new deck or replace an old one, Archadeck of Akron will work with you to design a high-quality structure using the most reliable materials. To get started, just call. You can contact Archadeck of Akron today at 330-754-1044 or email us.
We have a cautionary tale to share with you today, an illustration that brings to mind that old phrase, penny wise and pound foolish. We encounter situations like this sometimes, unfortunately, and we really hate to see a homeowner in this predicament.
Below is an email we received recently from a prospective client who regrettably chose a less reliable company to build a deck at their home.
Archadeck of Akron with this homeowner for a design consultation, created a custom deck design, drew up specs, and presented them with a quote for the job. The homeowner also met with two other builders and received quotes from them as well.
We’ll let the homeowner tell you what happened. Here is that email:
We had two quotes come in lower than yours, and made a highly regrettable decision to go with one of those contractors. While the lower price was enticing, we now have a whole mess of problems to deal with. He started the project on April 1 (perhaps this was an April Fools joke) and lied to us about obtaining a permit and regarding initial inspection. We caught him in his lie on Friday when he claimed to have the deck completed. Aside from the numerous issues with quality of the work (which was most certainly not completed as he claimed) he admitted that he lied about the permit and inspections. So we now have to work with the city to see if there is any way to approve the work without tearing the deck down, and then hopefully remedy the remaining issues. Meanwhile, we are stuck with a deck and steps that we’re afraid to allow our children on because we’re not confident that they’re safe. I guess we certainly are learning the hard way that you get what you pay for. If we had a do-over, I’d gladly pay you the higher price for quality work.
What a nightmare situation this homeowner was left to straighten out. It may be hard to believe that a builder would lie to the client about obtaining a building permit. It may be hard to believe a contractor would say the city had come out to perform an inspection when they had not. In an industry where most tell the truth and try to keep their promises, there will always be a few bad apples. It is really unfortunate because a few bad contractors tend to leave the impression that all contractors are bad.
A Job Done Well is Always Worth More Than a Job Gone Bad
This homeowner’s email illustrates the value of getting your project done right the first time. This family may end up paying more to have their deck built and re-built than they would have if they’d chosen Archadeck’s higher bid.
We don’t know whether the homeowner chose the lowest bid or the one in the middle. Many people go with the middle bid, assuming it’s safe to do so, and assuming the high bidder is simply overcharging. How do you know the contractor with the middle bid is reliable?
How do you know whether the high bidder is overcharging you or will actually produce a significantly better-designed and better-built structure for you? What if the high bidder’s work is worth the additional cost?
Lesson Learned: It Definitely Pays To Do Your Homework Before Hiring a Builder
The expression Buyer beware! is an excellent one to keep in mind when you get more than one quote and are trying to determine which builder to select. The best way to prevent a mistake like this one is to do your homework as well as seek out information about each of the outdoor living contractors you are considering. A reputable contractor will be happy to provide names and contact information of previous clients who will talk about their experience with that contractor.
What other homework should a homeowner do?
Educate yourself in the area of the project you are planning. One great thing to do would be to call the building department and learn the requirements. Then ask your potential contractors. At this point, you know the answer and do not have to rely on their response. Answers that differ too far from what you learned should throw up a red flag. Before the project starts, ask for a copy of the permit.
During the project ask to see the inspection sticker for the foundation. Here is another important thing to ask before choosing a contractor; ask for a copy of their general liability insurance and workers compensation. This is one area that surprises me the most. On average one potential customer per year asks me to provide them a copy of this paperwork.
Lastly, plan ahead. If you are thinking of a new outdoor project start planning and talking to contractors a minimum of 3 months in advance of when you are hoping to start. The good builders are busy. This leaves more room for the not so good ones to sneak in.
It’s not a good idea to rush through this project. I know what some of you are thinking and I have to admit I think similarly. I am smart enough to choose the right contractor and I can spot the red flags. Talking about the bad apples, yes some of them throw up easy red flags to spot. Others not so much. The more they lie or make up stories the more believable they come to a new potential client. It is usually not until after a project starts that the customer picks up on it. The truth of the matter is the customers who we have gone to fix or finish projects for that ran into issues are no less smart than you or I. Regardless of your budget and the size of your outdoor living project, why waste your money by working with someone who’s not ethical or qualified? At Archadeck of Akron, we welcome your inquiries and we’re happy to have you speak with prior clients.

As summer winds its way to Akron, OH, patios and hardscapes are in season. Are you ready? If not, you have several decisions to make. We don’t want to rush you, but summer is not going to last all year! If you plan to enjoy your new patio during prime patio season, it’s time to swing into action.
Patio builder Archadeck of Akron is available to help you sort through design options to select the materials, size, and shape for your perfect patio. As you explore different types of patios and consider how different styles of hardscapes would look added to your home, you may experience one of two things. Either the more you look at patio materials, the closer you’ll get to narrowing down your preferences or … you may find yourself overwhelmed. Either way, the process will be a whole lot easier if you work with a professional hardscape contractor – Archadeck of Akron, of course!
With that decision out of the way – having selected patio specialist Archadeck of Akron as your patio designer and builder – you can move on to the tougher decisions.
Does it matter which patio material you choose?
Of course it does! It matters a lot, because a patio addition becomes an integral part of your home. You’ll be spending a good deal of time on the patio, especially if it’s your primary outdoor living space. If you enjoy entertaining outdoors, it matters even more. It’s important to select a material that reflects your tastes, something you’ll enjoy for years.
The good news is whether you select pavers, bricks, natural stone, or stamped concrete, a patio is a low-maintenance outdoor living structure. Hose it off occasionally, or use a mild detergent, and you’re all set. If you choose to seal your patio for extra protection, you likely won’t need to reseal it for several years.
Is a stain and stamp concrete patio calling your name?
Plenty of Akron homeowners are hearing the call of stamped concrete for a new patio. Not only is this type of patio the most affordable, but it also lends itself to oodles of creativity. Once again, we’re talking about decisions you will need to make, but these are the fun kind – think colors and patterns.
— Random slate pattern.
With a stain and stamp concrete patio, clients usually select two colors. The main color is mixed into the concrete itself. The second color is called a release color. The release agent serves the practical purpose of keeping the stamp from sticking to the concrete as the installer stamps your pattern. In addition to that, the release agent adds a second color to your stamped concrete patio. It’s frequently used as an accent color.
Which stamped concrete patio designs are most popular right now?
A stain and stamp design that’s especially popular with our clients right now is a random slate pattern in gray. This stain and stamp combination produces a nice, neutral two-tone gray that matches almost anything. The popularity of this design isn’t surprising because gray is a very hot color right now in both interior and exterior design. Did you know that Benjamin Moore’s color of the year for 2019 is a shade of gray called Metropolitan?
Another popular selection is a wood plank pattern that mimics the look of hardwood floors. Using a soft brown with a walnut release will produce a stamped concrete patio your friends will swear is wood.
From colors to patterns, create your unique design combination
After selecting stain and release colors, you’ll need to select a stamp pattern for your concrete patio. If you haven’t explored patterns yet, you may be surprised by the number available. Stamp designs can mimic the look of brick, natural stone, slate, tile … and, yes, even wood planks. With so many patterns, you’ll have no trouble finding one you like. Pattern designs range from symmetrical and orderly to random or irregular, with a variety of textures. Have fun with it!
Paver patios provide classic style and extra durability
If you have your heart set on a paver patio, once again you have plenty of options to work with. At Archadeck of Akron we especially like using Unilock pavers, and we’ll be happy to show you why. Their beauty, high quality, and versatility cannot be surpassed. Unilock offers several price points, so pavers can be an affordable choice for a patio. Pavers are reliably uniform, and we can arrange them in many different patterns to achieve whatever look you have in mind. Working with several sizes and colors, we can create borders or other contrasting designs with pavers. The design possibilities can seem infinite.
Natural stone is an elegant choice for your new Akron, OH, patio
Some Ohio homeowners consider natural stone to be the most beautiful material for a patio. Types of stone available for patios include flagstone, granite, and marble. Sandstone, limestone, travertine, and slate are types of flagstone, and we’re just getting started! If you’re interested in a natural stone patio, we’ll narrow down your options by looking at what colors appeal to you most, and what shapes. Some types of stone are cut into rectangular shapes, while some are usually irregular in shape. Again, with natural stone you have plenty of options.
When does a patio become a hardscape?
Hardscape is a general term that encompasses patio materials, as opposed to plants used in landscaping, so the patio itself is a hardscape. However, a hardscape can include much more than a simple patio design. During your initial design consultation, we’ll talk with you about the size and shape you have in mind for your patio. The size of your yard and how much space is available for the patio is an important factor, of course. If you have in mind a patio project that includes an outdoor kitchen, fire pit, or outdoor fireplace, people are more likely to refer to that as a hardscape. Other hardscape elements include retaining walls, seating walls, pillars, and even planters.

Tax time is in full swing as the filing deadline quickly approaches. With this in mind, many Akron-area homeowners are making plans on how to spend the money they anticipate getting back with their tax refund this year. In the creature comfort world we live in, it is sometimes easy to make a decision to invest in items that yield little or no return on investment nor do they hold their value. Savvy homeowners, however, view their tax refund as an investment opportunity in their home and a way to improve upon their interior and exterior living spaces.
In the past, getting a bonus or refund might have been a good indication that it was time for a family vacation. But, times have changed and homeowners are smarter and now opting to create a great “staycation” environment in their own backyards rather than investing in an empty-ended vacation with no return on investment.
Each year, Archadeck of Akron sees a spike in website traffic around tax time — which makes perfect sense. First, the weather is warming up and people are stepping into their yards and thinking how great it would be to have a new deck, patio, porch or all of the above. And, as homeowners’ are finishing their tax returns they realize that they may have some extra money to invest in outdoor living space improvements.
Imagine being able to have the deck, patio, porch or outdoor room you have always dreamed of. Not only will these types of improvements increase the value of your home, but they will also add immeasurable return on the enjoyment you and your family will get!
Take a look at a few outdoor living space ideas that Would bring to life in your own Northeast Ohio backyard:

At Archadeck of Akron, we build custom outdoor living spaces the whole family can use and enjoy. More and more clients are inquiring about decks and porches that will safely accommodate their pets, and we totally get it!
We Americans love our furry friends – Archadeck of Akron owner, Patrick Sluss, is among them! It is estimated that 68% of American households have pets. Recent reports state that pet owners spend a whopping 70 billion per year caring for their animals. It stands to reason that of all the things we invest in to care for our animals, building your new outdoor living space to accommodate them is an absolute must. We know that every space in and around our homes is just more enjoyable with our beloved critters by our side!
— Decks and porches can accommodate our four-legged friends too!
Hamper would-be Houdinis with safety deck railings and doggy gates on your Akron deck!
Nobody wants to put out APB an on their dog! Even with microchip technology to help us reunite with lost pets, there are so many dangers out in the great big world for them! No doubt, as you are reading this, you are thinking of how scary it would be to endure a pet’s disappearance from your back yard! Archadeck of Akron can offer you peace of mind with simple pet safety solutions to keep them right where they should be.
Perhaps you have seen this popular social media post! We can choose to equip our animals with bumper collars, or as in this case a hot dog costume, to prevent the great escape…or we could give them a space to peruse freely without the threat of escape. Lots of smells and sounds out of doors attract our would-be escape artists, and before we know it, they’re on the move! Archadeck of Akron will build your deck or porch to impede Fido’s big adventure. We can recommend customization, such as deck railings with close pickets, and latching doggy gates to keep your pampered pooch safe and secure outdoors. If your dog is a jumper, we can even install a taller deck railing to dissuade him from hurdling his way to unsafe, open spaces!
Akron screened porches are just better with pets!
Screened porches and outdoor rooms are fantastic spaces to allow our pets needed fresh air and sunshine. Dogs and cats can even enjoy the comforts of a screened porch or three-season room when it’s too chilly for us. Archadeck of Akron can custom design your porch with pet-friendly features, such as doggy and kitty doors, where they can access their own dog run or fenced backyard from your porch. How about a pet door from inside your home to your enclosed space?
We can even recommend flooring that will make clean-up easy, in case of accidents or muddy paws after a backyard romp. Tile porch flooring and synthetic deck flooring are perfect for such scenarios, as both surfaces are simply cleaned with a quick wipe of water and mild detergent.
— Composite decking is perfect for easily cleaning up accidents and paw prints!
Do you have a custom pet-friendly outdoor living space in mind?
We want to hear your ideas! What sort of outdoor space do you think would best accommodate your pets? Maybe you’re thinking of a great patio, where they can laze around in your fenced backyard for sunshine and fresh air this spring and summer. Perhaps, you’re ready to go whole-hog with a custom three-season room with Eze-Breeze windows for ultimate pet and people comfort, even when the weather is not ideal.
Archadeck of Akron is ready to help you show your pets how much you love them with a truly custom space to accommodate their needs – and yours! You can reach us at 330-754-1044 or email us.
Here at Archadeck of Akron, I would say the number one question every homeowner wants to know is how much is my deck or outdoor living space going to cost.
Your outdoor living project or really any home renovation has a buying process that is very different from anything else. Even though these projects are in similar price ranges as a car it is still a very different experience. Dreaming of your backyard space is typically fun for most customers. The least favorite part is usually how much is this thing going to cost and how am I going to pay for this. Even if you do your research on what similar projects cost you still will not have an exact price with that information since every project and job site is different.
Why is having a budget important?
Having a budget in mind is a great help for us at Archadeck. Our goal is to learn your specific needs and design a project that addresses those needs and is in line with your budget. We have learned that typically everything a customer wants to build and what they want to spend are 9 time out of 10 different. With this in mind, we like to do two designs. One that fits the budget and one that includes everything the customer wants. In my experience customers typically arrive in the middle between the two.
Establishing and sharing your budget
Once you have established a budget, it is understandable not wanting to share your budget. I think most customers believe if they tell a contractor they have a $20,000 budget the contractor is going to give them a $20,000 price even if the project should really only cost $15,000. Unfortunately, there are contractors out there like that. A typical response I hear from customers on the budget question worded a different way is if I give you my budget that is the price you are going to give me. The issue here is a little miscommunication. The customer is trying to say they don’t want to spend the whole budget. The best way a customer can share their budget is by saying $20,000 is my max budget but I would feel more comfortable spending $15,000.
The budget question is a way for us to guide you in the right direction on material and design. I understand most people do not design outdoor living projects on a regular basis and don’t know how much it will cost. Even if you remember the exact size and cost of your last project prices go up almost every year. We are here to help and share what similar projects cost. We can even offer financing to help you get that project from an idea to completed. When car shopping financing is very common and since our projects are typically in a similar range why not check it out?
Putting it into perspective
Let’s talk more about car shopping. When car shopping we all know a Ford car is going to be cheaper than a Lexus. Similarly, we know a wood deck is going to be cheaper up front than a composite deck such as Timbertech. This is about where the similarities of car shopping and outdoor living spaces end.
That Ford car is the same Ford car at dealership ABC as it is XYZ. It has the same model, same parts, and most likely came off the same assembly line built by the same workers. It is fair to say getting a cheaper price at ABC is a deal since it is the exact same thing. With the internet, this applies to a lot of other goods purchased by consumers too, but not decks or patios. Your outdoor living space is going to be built with some different parts/ materials even if contractor ABC is using the same AZEK decking as contractor XYZ. In a perfect world say every item on your project is the same joist size, spacing, amount of screws, the same bolts, and so on. The carpenters building it are different.
What makes a deck an Archadeck. It’s the material, the plans, the craftsman, and their craftsmanship. We spend more time on your project and source better material. Yes, up front your project is most likely going to cost a little more, but we know it is worth it. It will pay off for the customer in the long run. We all know the most expensive project is the one that needs to be done twice and "the bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of a low price is forgotten. Why not call us to get your project right the first time instead of asking us to fix someone else work they left you with. I always say there are bad contractors who cannot give the customer what they think they want. Good contractors who can deliverer what the customer thinks they want, and great contractors/ designers who deliver what the customer really wants. We get there by spending time asking a lot of questions and go deeper than the budget.
Give us a call to learn more. We would love to help you design your deck or patio and show you the value we put into every project. You can reach us at 330-754-1044 or email us.
Archadeck of Akron has been building low-maintenance decks by AZEK and TimberTech for quite a few years and are pleased to announce the beginning of a new era of composite decking products, now offered exclusively under the TimberTech name. So, what’s the difference?
AZEK and TimberTech made a big announcement on February 3rd. These two names have always been virtually interchangeable in the PVC and composite decking market, offering their products under both names. The times, they are a changin’! All synthetic decking products will stay with the TimberTech brand, while AZEK streamlines to offer exterior trim and moulding products under their new moniker, AZEK Exteriors.
What does this mean for TimberTech deck and porch products?
Archadeck of Akron will still offer their complete line of deck and porch products by TimberTech. TimberTech remains the upper echelon of decking products, with unmatched technologies, offering the following lines: TimberTech AZEK, their capped polymer PVC decking; TimberTech PRO, their four-sided capped composite decking; and TimberTech EDGE, their three-sided capped composite decking.
Are there any new TimberTech decking products?
We’re so glad you asked! TimberTech has just introduced multi-width decking, a never-before-seen product in the outdoor building market! The new AZEK Vintage Collection multi-width decking planks bring an already inspired product lineup to brand new heights for deck builders and clients alike. Working with varied widths and choice finishes, this new line-up stands to be a total deck building game changer! TimberTech now offers three PVC decking plank widths – standard, wide, and narrow. Mixed and matched with each other, or with other TimberTech lines, these new planks will embolden a new movement in deck design and building. With added design capabilities, the sky is the limit for your new low-maintenance deck!
A Better TimberTech
TimberTech describes this new branding strategy as going “against the grain.” This statement comes with a double meaning. As is often the case, with growth comes challenges, but they vow to face them head-on to advance the status quo and change the future of low-maintenance decking products for the better. A stronger TimberTech brand will cultivate further growth of the most superior PVC and composite decking products on the market – with unrivaled technology, the largest collection of finishes and sizes, and incomparable design flexibility!
Here’s a question for millennials in the Akron, OH, area: Are you starting to think about purchasing a home of your own, or have you already crossed that one off your list?
Answer 1: I’m starting to look for a home – or at least thinking about it.
Great! House hunting can be fun and it can also be overwhelming. If you know what kind of house you want, it’s just a matter of locating it. You may unexpectedly find one you LOVE that’s not what you imagined for yourself. Keeping an open mind can lead to good things.
As the premier Akron deck and patio builder, we have a bit of advice for you: Don’t get hung up on finding a house with the perfect deck or patio. If the rest of the house speaks to you and has the features you want, we can update or replace the outdoor living space to get it right. “Archadeck of Akron”: https://akron.archadeck.com/listens as you talk about features you want in your outdoor living space. Then we make it happen with a custom design just for your home.
Answer 2: Done. We have the house.
We need a better deck or patio – or both. We need a porch. We need a sunroom.
Once you purchase a home, there’s a period where all you’re doing is making it yours. Sure, you own it, but does it represent you honestly? That can take time. Sometimes all you need to add are the finishing touches. Find a sweet rug, hang your pictures on the wall, take down the light fixtures that came with the house and put in some you really like. Not your grandmother’s light fixtures. Not your mother’s.
Sometimes more work is required to make your imprint on a home. You may decide you don’t like that carpet. Take it up and put down better flooring. If you want to surround yourself with wood, bring in wood floors. You don’t love the style of the kitchen cabinets the home came with? Paint them or consider upgrading the hardware.
Archadeck of Akron is here to help you if the home you purchased didn’t come with the perfect deck, patio, porch or sunroom. The home’s outdoor living space may have been perfect for the prior owners but if it’s not right for you, we won’t stop until it is. Add a deck, replace one, or make it bigger. Let us turn your deck into a screened porch and build you a bigger, better deck. Is your patio too plain? We can add the outdoor fireplace or fire pit you need.
Financing, if you need it.
Archadeck of Akron is here to meet you where you are. If your outdoor living project depends on access to financing, let us know so we can help you with that. It can make a huge difference.
Personalize your outdoor living space.
We can’t say it enough: Make it yours. Your outdoor living space won’t feel right until it reflects your lifestyle, your favorite things, the way you want to live outdoors.
Step 1. What do you like?
At Archadeck of Akron, we don’t assume anything. Tell us what you like about your home’s outdoor living space – deck, porch, patio, pool, etc. – and tell us what you don’t like. Show us what you’ve saved on Pinterest and which deck, porch or patio builders you’re following on Instagram. Do you like TV design shows? When you’re looking for ideas, where do you look? What draws your attention?
Follow us on social media for videos and examples of our work:

Step 2. Call us at 330-754-1044 for a free design consultation.
Design is a big part of what makes any outdoor living structure right for you. Materials for a deck … wood, or low-maintenance wood alternatives? What’s more important to you, surrounding yourself with natural materials or having the convenience of a low-maintenance living space? For the patio, do you like natural stone or the more uniform appearance and durability of manufactured pavers? Archadeck of Akron can show you all kinds of design options, and we’ll let you lead the way to finding what works best for you.
When we say, “We’ll meet you where you are”? – we mean that in two ways. First, we’ll come to meet with you at your home. Not just because it’s more convenient for you. Seeing your home, your furnishings and your design choices inside the home will give us clues about what you might want outdoors. Second, tell us what you’ve already researched about outdoor structures and what questions you have.
Step 3. Sign a contract.
It’s a necessity in our line of work. It spells out our agreement so we both know what to expect as we work to complete your new outdoor living space.
Step 4. Stand back and watch us build.
Share our progress on social media so your friends can see your deck, patio, porch or sunroom come to life in real time. When it’s completed, they’ll be dying to come over and see it.
Step 5. Give us a great review!

Bottom line, we’ve got you covered from every angle!
No other Akron-area outdoor structure builder provides the number and strength of warranties that Archadeck provides. Your project will be built. Workmanship is covered for one year. Structural integrity is covered for 5 years. The materials may be covered for up to 30 years. Your Archadeck manager will provide you with all warranties in case there should ever be a problem. You’re looking for paradise in your backyard. That includes the comforting thought that your project will be built. It will be built according to exacting high-quality standards and you will have protection on workmanship and materials long after it’s built.
If you’ve had a problem with another builder — we can help!
In the terrible circumstance that a different builder did not honor your contract, did not build to the specifications or left shoddy work in their wake, we would be happy to discuss working with you to complete or fix that project. We have helped many customers in these unfortunate situations and we would be happy to work with you to take on an existing project.

Archadeck of Akron is here to help you plan your anticipated outdoor living project and to save you money!
You might think this simply is not the time to be thinking about your 2019 outdoor living building project. Archadeck of Akron implores you to not only think about it, but to begin working with us to design your project now. Why do we feel so strongly about acting now? We are barreling towards the end of 2018. As your Akron-ara outdoor living designer and builder, we want to make sure you know we usually see pricing increases on outdoor building materials after year-end. As 2019 rolls around, and manufacturers’ price increases roll out, your anticipated deck, patio, porch or sunroom project will cost more. If you sign a contract with us by December 31 to build your project, you can lock in 2018 prices.
Other variables, such as a strong economy, can also adversely affect materials costs and project timelines. Less available workforce equates to longer project delivery times. All the more reason to act now. Keep your project on time and on budget by getting ahead of these unfortunate construction trends!

At Archadeck of Akron, this simple question is often asked when planning a deck project. Folks want to know what the standards for materials mixing are, and whether it’s an outdoor living design faux pas. The answer is quite simple – YES, you can mix materials!
When it comes to designing your dream deck, we understand that most clients do not bring an unlimited budget to the table. Archadeck of Akron will remain cognizant of your outdoor living design and building requirements, from style, to function, and always, your budget. Cost is the foremost reason we are asked about mixing low-maintenance composite and PVC decking with pressure-treated wood. We understand such concerns, and we are happy to tell you that there are several ways to mix and match materials to keep your cost-to-build reined in!
— This screened porch and deck combination space by Archadeck is a good example of mixing low-maintenance decking with a PT wooden rail.
Using PT wood framing and uprights that will essentially be hidden from view is one very easy way to save money by mixing wood with your new low-maintenance deck. Even using low-maintenance balusters with a PT rail cap will save cost, and still look fantastic. Add a low-maintenance top cap to the PT framing to further tie in your low-maintenance decking with the railing! Considering that our hands come into contact with railing caps, a low-maintenance cap is a great idea for usability – no splintering!
The flipside of that idea for your new Akron deck?
— Archadeck of Akron resurfaced this deck using low-maintenance TimberTech composite decking with a low-maintenance rail.
So maybe you are really looking to save money on your new deck project, and decide to go with an all-wood deck. Or perhaps you just prefer wood over composite or PVC materials. No problem there either! You can have a wood deck, and still add a designer and low-maintenance element by way of low-maintenance railings. A full aluminum balustrade will save you oodles of time in maintenance and will look fantastic with your new wood deck. Some aluminum railings can also be fitted to accommodate a wood or composite material top cap.
Akron outdoor living is about fusing design aesthetics and budgetary requirements.
Consider the idea of mixing materials in your outdoor space as you would put together a new suit and tie, or a living room rug and home accents. Textures, patterns, and colors are all meant to work beyond their assigned motifs. When it comes to selecting any outdoor living building material, Archadeck of Akron has the design experience to show you what choices will look great together, along with your home’s existing finishes. We will also help you make such decisions with cost in mind, and we can expertly guide you toward materials that will age well together.
— This outdoor living space utilizes materials of various mediums.
The main thing to keep in mind is to never be afraid to ask! Every question is important when it comes to giving our clients their ideal outdoor living area.
If you are you ready to build your dream Akron outdoor living space, Archadeck of Akron is ready to design your perfect deck using wood, synthetic or a mix of both. Contact us today to schedule your free design consultation. You can reach us at 330-754-1044 or email us.
Does the approaching holiday season trigger thoughts of outdoor living? It should! Since we can give you a space that is comfortable year round.
The holidays can mean joyful hugs and sweet conversations, the coziness of a warm fire indoors or out, making memories, honoring traditions and enjoying good times. So, what do these holiday activities have to do with outdoor living? Let’s look around!
Add outdoor living space to accommodate a growing family
As your family grows, your home may feel cramped when you’re entertaining during the holidays. As your children get married, you add spouses and grandchildren and boom! Suddenly you’ve outgrown the space you have. Whether it’s Thanksgiving or Christmas or any other celebration, the more the merrier! If you need more space but don’t relish the idea of adding an indoor room, look to outdoor living to get you through!
Akron OH sunrooms – space for the holidays and beyond!
The most climate-controlled option for adding outdoor living space is an Akron OH sunroom, sometimes called a 4-season room, because it is tied into your home’s heating and cooling system. A sunroom serves several purposes during the holidays … and all year long.
A sunroom can provide the perfect “overflow” space when you’re entertaining. Do you have one or more “children’s tables” for big holiday meals? They will love getting to eat in the sunroom. Want to invite 30 more people to your holiday party? A sunroom will give your guests more room to mingle under the mistletoe.
Archadeck of Akron can design a sunroom with a higher ceiling than that of the rest of your house. Finally, a space for a taller Christmas tree! A sunroom addition with a vaulted ceiling can do that for you. And any time of year, a sunroom full of windows will bring the outdoors in, visually, while also keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer.
Akron OH 3-season rooms let you work with the weather … when it suits you
Our Akron clients love their 3-season rooms and all the ways they make holiday entertaining easier. A three-season room offers many of the advantages of a sunroom except they’re not tied into the home’s HVAC system. What we love about a 3-season room is the way you can open sliding window panels when you want to reveal screens and let fresh air circulate. Then, if it’s too cold or too hot outside, just slide the window panels closed to keep those temperatures outside!
Like sunrooms, three-season rooms can provide festive overflow space. If you love holiday decorating, here you gain another room to show off your flair for holiday décor. Add a second Christmas tree in your new Akron OH outdoor room! To keep a 3-season room cozy, close the windows and add a couple of safety-rated space heaters or … add an outdoor fireplace. That’s right! A 3-season room with a fireplace will be everyone’s favorite spot, holidays or not.
Akron OH screened porches can be your new “holiday central”
Do you and your guests need an escape when the house is so full of holiday cheer, lights and warmth you just have to get outside for fresh air? Screened porch builder Archadeck of Akron can design the perfect screened porch to meet your needs. for year-round enjoyment. Again, another room to decorate for the holidays! Another option for adding an outdoor fireplace. And the perfect place for coolers so guests don’t have to keep opening your refrigerator for beverages.
Akron OH outdoor kitchens double your food prep space
Ever feel like you need two kitchens during the holidays? By adding an outdoor kitchen on your deck, porch or patio, suddenly you have twice as much space to prepare big meals. Suddenly barbeque might sound as good or better than turkey. With an outdoor kitchen, you can offer your guests tasty meats and veggies from the grill or smoker. If you’ve been wanting to fry a turkey, how about doing that OUTSIDE … safely … in your outdoor kitchen?
Akron OH families and guests gather ’round outdoor fireplaces and fire pits
When the holidays bring family and friends together, there is no better place for cozy conversation than before an outdoor fireplace or fire pit designed and built by Archadeck of Akron. We can incorporate a fireplace into the design of a porch or three-season room.
A fire pit is a wonderful addition to a new patio, and we can even design a new deck for you with a fire pit. Everyone gravitates to the fireplace or fire pit, and that scenario is multiplied during the winter holiday season.
Plan now for your 2019 holidays with an eye to adding outdoor living spaces to accommodate more family members and guests. Start now to have your space ready for the early summer holidays, waiting till spring will be too late since we have already started booking spring projects. While you’re enjoying this year’s seasonal celebrations, look around your home for ways a new outdoor living space could make next year’s dinners and parties more enjoyable for everyone.
If you have those feelings of if only we had more room; if only we had an outdoor kitchen or fireplace; if only we had a sunroom, 3-season room, screened porch or fire pit, let Archadeck of Akron make your dreams of easier holiday entertaining come true. Contact us today to schedule your free design consultation. You can reach us at 330-754-1044 or email us.
One of the most frequent questions we get asked here at Archadeck of Akron when it comes to patios is should I use concrete or pavers?
Patios make a great outdoor living space for dining, entertaining, and relaxing in the sun. They also make a great outdoor living accompaniment to a custom deck, porch or outdoor fire feature. If you are considering the addition of a patio or hardscape space to your Akron-area backyard chances are you are doing your homework. One quick Google search for patio materials shows you some very different categories and so many diverse opinions on each. Even before you consider a design, you will first want to decide whether you want to use pavers or concrete for your new patio.
As your premier Akron, OH, patio builder, we recommend pavers, but we install stamped concrete as well. There is a saying about concrete that there are two types, the kind that cracks and the kind that is already cracked. We warranty every paver project and pride ourselves on our quality and craftsmanship. Archadeck wants to ensure you have a beautiful patio that will last for many years. Here are three important factors to consider as you begin researching material for your Akron-area patio design.
#1 Patio maintenance and repair
One of the most important factors to consider before making patio material decisions is how the ground shifts here in Ohio. With the extreme hot and cold temperatures in our region, shifting is inevitable and will eventually affect your patio. The good news is some patio materials are easier to repair than others.
Concrete patios and stamped concrete patios have a high risk of cracking. When installing stamped concrete we install control joints at recommended spacing giving the concrete the ability to crack.. These control joints are the saw cuts you see on every driveway and sidewalk. Reinforcing wire mesh is another things that helps prevent cracking and strengths concrete. Pavers may eventually begin to shift over a long period of time. Fortunately, it is easy to relay the section that is beginning to shift. Unfortunately the only real solution to remove a crack in concrete is to replace it. If you’re looking for high quality and good value, Unilock pavers are a great choice.
#2 The truth about pavers and weeds
One common concern we often hear as we begin looking at design ideas with our clients is that weeds will grow between the pavers, making the patio look unkempt. To prevent this, we sweep polymeric sand between the pavers of every Akron patio we build. This sand becomes hard on top which prevents weeds.
#3 Patio price points
Another consideration in your patio material decision is price point. Ultimately it comes down to price, value, and quality. If cost is a determining factor, then concrete will meet that need. The lowest of these price points is concrete. Stamped concrete pricing varies based on color and stamp pattern. Entry level stamped patterns and colors are more cost effective than most pavers. However, stamped concrete is still concrete and you will run the risk of it cracking where you don’t want it to. For this reason concrete projects do not carry the same warranty as pavers. A paver patio, though pricier than concrete, has the ability to flex without breaking since it is made up of smaller pieces. Pavers will last the longest with the least amount of maintenance. Stamped concrete must be sealed every so often. Pavers do not need sealed unless you like the look or have tress that will stain the pavers.
We use high-quality materials and methods in order to ensure an outdoor living space to be enjoyed for years. If you are considering a new hardscape outdoor living project, either pavers or concrete give us a call at 330-754-1044. We can go more in depth with you about the pros and cons of paver and concrete. You may also reach us via email to schedule your complimentary outdoor living space design consultation.
As Akron’s patio and deck builders, we just love working on an outdoor living project on a brand new home. These homeowners in Wadsworth, OH, contacted Archadeck of Akron once they settled into their new home. With no outdoor living space included in the design of their new home, they (and we) were working with a completely blank slate. They could add whatever outdoor living space(s) they wanted onto their new home. Fun!
The homeowners opted for a deck and patio combination space. That’s exactly what we would have chosen, too! Because of the slope of their lot, the main floor of the home is on the second level at the back of the house. You know what that means … yes … an elevated deck. And an elevated deck means … yes … you can have a covered porch underneath by using a InsideOut under-deck drainage system. Just perfect for those times when you want to be outdoors but need the protection a covered space provides, whether you’re ducking the hot sun or an unexpected shower. It also provides the perfect place for your grill.
For the deck, the clients chose low-maintenance TimberTech Legacy composite decking with a Key-Link cable rail. This amazing railing system gives the deck a very contemporary feeling. It’s practically see-through because when you look through the cables, you barely even notice them. This horizontal cable infill railing system is made by Key-Link Fence & Railing.
The homeowners chose a paver patio, and Archadeck of Akron designed the patio with curved lines for visual interest. The patio is actually built on two levels, giving the clients a convenient way to delineate two separate areas for different purposes. First, they have a dining area directly outside their French doors. Then, on the other side of the patio, and one step down, they have a fire pit with plenty of chairs around it for family and friends. The fire pit is gas-burning with lava rock.
The material the homeowners selected for the hardscapes is Unilock Brussels Dimensional pavers, which have a tumbled finish. We used these pavers for the patio, the fire pit, a retaining wall and a column at the edge of their dining area. We also used them to enclose the grill under the covered patio and for columns around the posts supporting the patio cover.

If you love the look and feel of wood, prefer a wooden deck and have the impression that composite decks are taking over the world of outdoor living structures, don’t despair. At Archadeck of Akron, we still build decks with wood. We are your Akron wood deck builder AND we are your Akron composite deck builder, because we also build decks with composite materials.
You are the customer. You will select the building materials for your outdoor living project. We will consult with you for your input at each step in the design process, which is when building materials are specified for your project. If you want wood, you will have wood. We know that no other material looks more like wood. Because wood is a natural material, it’s going to have natural character that manufactured decking boards will not. Pressure-treated pine is also less expensive than composite decking materials, and that is often part of its appeal. We won’t try to persuade you to select a more expensive material.
We have heard a homeowner or two question whether Archadeck still builds wood decks, and the answer is yes, we do! I imagine we always will. If you’re in a conversation with someone who raises that question, you have our permission to let them know.
Why You Should Choose a Wooden Deck from Archadeck over Another builder
We believe in building wooden decks with top-quality pressure-treated pine. We purchase our pressure-treated pine from specialty lumber suppliers, not from home improvement stores. We use a higher grade of wood that minimizes inconsistencies like knots and warping.
When we build your deck, we do it the “Archadeck way.” Specifically, that means Archadeck of Akron always builds above minimum code to present you with a high-quality deck that will not only meet, but exceed the industry standards. For example, we install our decking boards at an angle, giving your deck increased stability. We screw the wooden deck boards down and use screws on railings, too. While this method takes longer and is more labor-intensive, it provides a stronger connection and ensures a stronger structure.
All of our decks, wood and otherwise, are warrantied. Archadeck provides a five-year structural warranty and a one-year workmanship warranty. In addition, pressure-treated materials have a limited lifetime warranty.
Archadeck of Akron’s Secret for Minimizing Wooden Deck Maintenance
We wouldn’t be Akron’s wooden deck builder if we didn’t share this tip with you. Everyone knows wooden decks require annual maintenance and that without it, a wood deck will begin to deteriorate more quickly than a well-maintained deck. You just can’t get around that; however, here’s our tip: let us design your deck with an aluminum or vinyl railing system. The most time-consuming aspect of wooden deck maintenance is sanding and sealing the wooden railing and spindles (also called balusters and pickets). If you choose a railing system made with another material, your annual wood maintenance chores are suddenly not as daunting. Several manufacturers offer very attractive aluminum and vinyl railings and spindles in a range of colors. Metal railings are usually powder-coated for a stronger, more durable finish. When Archadeck of Akron designs your deck, we will show you a wide selection of railing systems that don’t require the maintenance that wood needs.
Archadeck Offers a More Affordable Alternative to Custom Wooden Deck Designs
Here’s another tip we want to share with you. We know Archadeck outdoor living projects—even wooden ones—can be more expensive than some other builders’ projects because we custom design each structure specifically for you. We do offer an alternative, however, that’s less expensive than our custom designs. Archadeck offers a series of deck designs called Archadeck Lifestyle Classics that are more affordable than custom designs. The architectural renderings for these decks are already pre-approved by the national Archadeck headquarters, reducing the turnaround time on these projects, too. These designs were created with affordability, flexibility and quality in mind, and the materials we use to build them can be tailored to your preferences. This is a win-win option if you’re choosing to build with wood. A more affordable design and a more affordable decking material give you the most affordable deck available from the highest-quality deck builder around.
If you’re interested in adding a wooden deck to your home—or adding any other outdoor living structure—contact Archadeck of Akron today to schedule your free design consultation. You can reach us at (330) 754-1044 or email us.
If you think a pergola is only for decoration, you’re partly right and partly wrong. That’s because some homeowners do choose to include a pergola in their outdoor living space purely for decoration. Pergolas are eye-catching. If you want a pergola for its decorative function, it will not disappoint. However, some homeowners include pergolas in their deck or patio design for other reasons as well. Here Archadeck of Akron, your Akron pergola builder, looks at several of the reasons you may want to include a pergola in your outdoor living space design. Which of these reasons resonates with you?
7 Reasons to Include a Pergola in Your Combination Outdoor Living Structure
1. For decorative purposes — The pergola itself is attractive from a design perspective, and you can train flowering vines to grow up and over it if you want to use it like a trellis or arbor.
2. For partial shade — Pergolas are most often designed to provide shade; however, the traditional pergola supplies only partial shade. We’re careful to tell clients this so they’ll have the appropriate expectations of a traditional pergola. The amount of shade a pergola casts depends on how it’s situated in relation to the path of the sun as well as the width, number and angle of the rafters across the top. Archadeck of Akron can adjust the angle of the pergola’s rafters to increase or decrease the amount of shade provided.
3. For total shade — If you want to get creative, we can design a pergola for you that provides more shade or even total shade. To accomplish this, we’ll add another material across the top of the structure. Canvas fabric can work for this purpose, but the material usually used for a total shade pergola is a panel of Polygal plastic sheeting. Polygal is flexible, unbreakable and lightweight and comes in several colors and degrees of transparency. One thing homeowners like about Polygal is that it not only blocks the sun’s UV rays, it can also provide thermal insulation, keeping you cooler.
4. To support additional amenities — Here’s where pergolas become really interesting because we can get creative with them if these ideas appeal to you. We can install a ceiling fan under a pergola or hang a privacy screen from it. You can hang wind chimes on a pergola or even add curtains or some colorful, gossamer fabric and allow it to float and wave in the breeze.
5. To shelter additional amenities — Many homeowners enjoy bench seating under a pergola. The benches we install under Akron patio pergolas are usually made of stone to coordinate with the patio materials. For Akron deck pergolas, we usually build benches with the same materials we’re using for the deck. If you want to place a dining table for two under your pergola, we can install subtle lighting there to create a romantic nighttime atmosphere in which you can actually see each other. A pergola is a dreamy setting for a hot tub or spa! Some homeowners choose to install a fountain or statue under the structure, allowing the pergola to serve as a frame for art and beauty.
6. To define the boundary of your outdoor living space — When we design your patio or deck with a pergola at one end of the structure, the pergola serves as a visual cue that defines the boundary of your outdoor living space. Your eyes and brain process this without you necessarily being aware of it.
7. To signal the transition from one area to another — A pergola makes a statement when it serves as the gateway from your deck to your patio, or from your patio to your pool surround, for example.
Choosing the Material for Your Akron Pergola
Traditionally, pergolas were constructed of wood, which allows the structure to feel like part of the natural surroundings. Cedar is often used to build pergolas. Other materials we can use include vinyl, PVC, composite decking materials and powder-coated aluminum, which are all low-maintenance materials. Vinyl pergolas are usually white and would contrast nicely with your deck or patio materials. PVC can be painted any color you desire. When we build your pergola with composite decking materials, we can use the same color we use for your deck, or you can select a coordinating or contrasting color. Powder-coated aluminum pergolas are available in an array of color choices. Peruse our pergola galleries on our website for examples of pergola designs, colors and materials.
—This vinyl pergola stands over a stamped concrete patio to provide shade for guests.
Erase from your mind the notion that all pergolas look alike! Akron pergolas can be narrow and dainty or wide and beefy, and there are infinite varieties of pergola sizes and shapes between those two extremes. As your Akron pergola designer, we will create a pergola for you that enhances and defines another outdoor living structure such as a deck or patio. Many homeowners who ask for “only a pergola” find that the structure is lost and lonely when it’s not used on conjunction with a combination outdoor living project.
Contact Archadeck of Akron today to schedule your free pergola -and-deck-or-patio design consultation. The combination of all three, the pergola, deck and patio, is something to consider, too! You can reach us at (330) 754-1044 or email us.
When a homeowner comes to us and requests we create a new outdoor living space for them, it is sometimes possible that their existing deck can be re-decked, resurfaced or upgraded and in some cases even expanded upon to achieve their goal. As the area’s premier deck and porch builder, here at Archadeck of Akron, custom designed decks are among our many specialties. With this in mind, we can often expand upon and customize what is already present in your backyard space in order to deliver you the backyard of your dreams.
Elaborating and improving the design of your existing deck can include redecking the existing decking boards from aged wood to new, top-quality wood again or from wood to a low-maintenance synthetic such as TimberTech or AZEK that is easier to care for and will outlast pressure treated wood by a long shot. Other benefits of redecking/resurfacing include adding character with a dynamic shape, expanding your deck’s original size to enhance function, railing upgrades and even a directional change in the stairs. In many cases, these upgrades are possible by utilizing the substructure and footings of your existing Akron deck.
New deck or redeck? — that is the question
Ultimately, the first step in determining if your existing deck is a good candidate for redecking is to have it evaluated by a reputable deck builder such as Archadeck of Akron. If the substructure (which is the base that the deck is built on) is in good shape, you may be able to save money and time by redecking instead of tearing down your old deck and starting from scratch with a new one. The key elements we need to evaluate to determine if your deck is a candidate will include the quality and structural integrity of the original substructure and how it has weathered over time. We will also determine if any applicable building codes have changed since the deck was originally installed, if the deck fits all the criteria required for redecking, we will make sure it complies with those new building codes as well.
Once your existing deck is deemed a good candidate for resurfacing, we will then work with you to help you choose the material that best fits your needs and budget. Here at Archadeck of Akron, we have many decking materials to choose from. We can help you decide on a wood or synthetic decking material. Synthetic materials such as composites, capstock and solid PVC are composed of elements that stabilize and protect them from UV damage. These materials also have several advantages over most species of wood. The synthetic material is much less likely to crack or chip, and are impervious to insects such as termites. An added benefit of choosing synthetic is that it will never have to be treated or stained — that means you focus on enjoying your backyard rather than maintaining it!
If you are ready to breathe new life into your tired backyard deck and add years of outdoor living enjoyment contact Archadeck today at (330) 754-1044 or email us.
Three season rooms have always been popular in Akron, OH, and that trend is still growing. Homeowners weighing the tradeoffs between a new screened porch or sunroom are delighted to learn there are a couple of solutions that offer features of each. As your Akron outdoor room builder, we want to look at several of the options you might consider.
The Akron Screened Porch
The most important features of an outdoor room are windows, windows, windows. That’s one reason why a screened porch is so appealing. Most of the “wall” space is filled with screening, so you can see through the enclosure from floor to ceiling. You feel close to nature on a screened porch. You get full advantage of any breeze coming through, you smell the flowers and freshly-mowed lawn, and you’re protected from the sun’s rays directly reaching your skin. While a screened porch offers protection from UV rays, rain and pesky insects, it doesn’t allow you to control the temperature in your outdoor room.
The Akron Three-Season Room
The appeal of a 3-season room in the Akron area is that it provides an additional level of protection from the elements when compared to a screened porch. Akron 3-season rooms really do seem like the best of both worlds. In building a three-season room, we can use standard windows or a convertible 4-track window system called Eze-Breeze. You can have as many windows as you’d like, and they’ll have screens, too. The benefit of this convertible window system is that you can slide window panels around so at any given moment, three out of four window panels can be open to the screen. This system allows substantial air flow and offers a mostly-unobstructed view whether you’re looking out through the windows or the screens. What’s more, you can actually remove all of the window panels completely and store them for part of the year, allowing 100% airflow. And when it starts getting chilly outside, just close all the window panels as a defense against cooler temperatures and still enjoy a great view. What’s really good to know is that a 3-season room is not much more of an investment than a screened porch.
The Akron Four-Season Room
Now, if you want to take it a step further, we’re going to extend your home’s heating and air conditioning system into the design of your new outdoor room and add insulation. This is usually called a sunroom or a four-season room because with insulation and temperature controls, you can count on being able to use the room year-round. We still design the room with lots of windows! The Pella Encompass line of vinyl window frames works well in an outdoor room. And yes, we still consider it an “outdoor room” because our goal with this room is to bring the outdoors inside.
Once you select your type of outdoor room, Archadeck of Akron will guide you through the design process where we’ll talk about what material you’d like for the flooring. We recommend several different choices for flooring, so we’ll go over the benefits of each and compare the costs for you. Many clients select composite decking materials for the floor, and this is an especially good choice if you’re building a deck and a porch or three-season room together. We can also build a three-season room with a wood floor. Wood is more economical, and because the wood will be protected in this covered room, you won’t have the weathering issues we see with wood on a deck. Whether we use wood or composite flooring, we add a screen under the floor so those pesky bugs can’t find their way in.
The flooring choices don’t stop there! AZEK porch products offer some very nice-looking flooring, which may be more expensive, and cold-weather tiles are also an option. We do present you with some budget-friendly options. If you want the tongue-and-groove look for your flooring, we have a local craftsman who can tongue and groove a standard TimberTech composite board, which looks fantastic.
Additional Amenities for Your Archadeck of Akron Outdoor Room
Archadeck of Akron installs electricity in our three and four-season rooms, as well as screened porches, so you’re never without light — and ceiling fans, if you desire fans. For cooler temperatures in a three-season room, you may find that plugging in a space heater allows you to use the room for more of the year.
One thing you can be sure of with Archadeck as your Akron three season room builder is getting the Archadeck difference. All of our custom-designed outdoor rooms are designed and built to blend in with your home’s exterior. Your Archadeck outdoor room will never look like an afterthought. We’re famous for the “always been there” appeal of our outdoor room additions.

At Archadeck of Akron, we hear many homeowners comment we will just wait until spring to think about our outdoor living project. The truth is if you wait until the outdoor living season has already arrived, chances are it will be later summer, or even fall before you are able to enjoy your new space — and here’s why:
It is only natural that many people think of building outdoor projects in the spring when the weather is nice and they want to get outside, but sometimes it can be challenging to hire a quality contractor during this time. Choosing to secure your project details during the fall and winter months has many advantages. That is why I am often stumped when a customer has their preliminary plan in place and says we will just wait until spring to sign the contract and confirm moving ahead with the project.
Start Planning Now to Enjoy by Spring!
From my experience as an outdoor living space designer and builder, waiting until spring to begin your project can mean waiting longer to enjoy your finished space. Keep in mind that we have other jobs underway in the Akron area. Then we have more projects, with signed contracts, each one scheduled to begin as soon as a current project is completed. Any reputable contractor will have some lead time before they can begin construction on your project.
When is the best time of year to embark on an outdoor living addition you may ask?
The answer to this question may be more surprising than you may think. Many homeowners are under the impression that outdoor structures are best to build during the warm weather months and I would agree. However, under the right conditions, there are projects or parts of projects that can be worked on any time of the year.
Winter is a great time to get things in place for spring and summer, projects like decks, covered porches, pergolas and patios.
The backlog of work is generally shorter in late fall early winter before things begin to warm up. Required permit applications and HOA approvals have shorter waiting periods, thus saving time in the overall project schedule. Planning and finalizing your design now will ensure being able to reap the benefits of your new structure in time for warm weather. Your time is valuable, so moving ahead results in less of an interruption to your life, as most people use their yards less during the fall and winter months.
The most important timing factor for your new outdoor living project is when you first make the call to schedule your design consultation. The sooner you start the process, the sooner your new deck, porch, patio (or combination of these) will be completed. That’s why you should go ahead and get started now. Before you know it, spring will be here! If you take steps now to begin setting up the project, you’ll be showing off your new outdoor living space in time for warm weather!
Contact Archadeck of Akron today to schedule your design consultation. The call and the consultation are free, but the benefits you will get from a new outdoor living space are priceless! You can reach us at (330) 754-1044 or email us.
